Its a beautiful old Club with a long history and is known for their owner's well maintained fleet of yachts. I'm certain that if you visit there you will be treated with the proper southern hospitality.

I have been going to The Cavalier since 1973. Its a great club good food but it can be a very HOT place so pick a cooler month to vist unless you like it hot. Lots of current runs through the narrow openings under the Bridges --you can get in trouble fast espically on the weekends when the local small out boards would get out of your way. The last time I went through on low tide in a 75ft hatt. on a Sat. I'll never do that again. There are some shallow spots when you go through the narrows. Great golfing also!!!!! Have a good cruise there's lots large older and new homes in Back Bay.
It's a magnificent club. I was a member until several years ago. I've been going there for over 35 years and had a boat there for many. It is easy to get to and fun to be there. Short bike ride to the beach, restaurants, stores, etc. Enjoy.

Thanks so much. I guess it will take me two days each way to get there from Long Island. First day from Huntington to Cape May (about 160 nm) and the second day form Cape May to Cavalier (about 150 nm). The dockmaster says that I can fuel up right in my slip which is a nice convenience as well. Now here is another subjective inquiry--is three to five days too long for the kids to maintain their interest in Virginia Beach (they will be 19 and 16)? I have never been there.

If you are in Huntington, LI, I'd suggest a trip east instead of west..if you've done that repeatedly, "go west young man"....anyway, if you'd like some suggestions to the east just email me...laods and loads of locations of interest.

Rob - been East for the most part (usual stops- Nantucket, Newport, Block, Montauk, Sag Harbor, Mystic etc.) and North as well. We have not ventured South other than when we were down in Ocean Reef and the Bahamas. Kids have objected to Annapolis as being too stuffy so that's why I was thinking Virginia Beach. Our traditional trip up to Lake Champlain is not in the cards given a relatively short window for the trip.

I used to keep my boat in tidewater, Va and bought my new boat down from Mattituck, NY to VA and went on the outside the whole way. I did that trip last May. The part of Va Beach you are visiting is very nice but the strip in Va Beach is kind of cheesy and in my opinion is no place for a family on weekend nights. If you guys are dinghy people you will have fun exploring Lynhaven bay and there is a nice park nearby (seashore state park). I think 1 or 2 days would be plenty in VA Beach. Look into going about an hour north up the bay to Cape Charles and stay at Bay Creek Marina. I think the name is bay creek. Also if you are coming in the summer be ready for the jellyfish. We stopped in Ocean City, MD on the way down and it was a lot like the Va Beach strip but it looked like some very pretty islands to explore by dinghy across the inlet. Think about coming down on the outside and going back north up the bay. If you have any more questions email me.
