Folks, I have to share with all of you a recent discovery. My 79 58MY had an increasing list to port. Couldn't quite chase it down. Very noticeable at the exhaust outlets from outside. I started the engine and when I shut it down a friend noticed the rapid intake of water into the exhaust pipe from outside. That didn't seem correct?!!!!! I went into the master stateroom and opened up the lower cabinets and removed the access panel under the vanity on the port side only to find that the fiberglass exhaust system at about 10' into the rear of the boat was resting on the hull. The exhaust is held in place by aluminum gussets fastened to the wood panels along the boat. 3/4" screws. All worked their way out over the years and the exhaust had a low spot in the boat. Too make matters even more serious the rubber boot joint that joins multiple lengths of 10" pipe had so much stress on it at the low point that 1 of the 2 pipe bands had broken. So, there I was with a 10" hole in my boat (exhaust) with 1 band holding the rubber boot. I don't think there is a bilge pump made that would keep up with that water flow.
So, here is how I fixed it...I went into the VIP berth and removed the mattress on the port bed. There is an access hole to the rear of the bed. I took a 1.5" steel shaft and used that to suspend a rachet strap around the exhaust. I started the engine and ran up the rpm to run the water from the exhaust and lighten the load on the low spot. I then raised the exhaust. It was down a total of 7.5" from where it should be! I made 2 wood gussets and placed them under 2 equi-spaced locations from the rear of the boat, epoxied them in and guess what? No more list. The water exhaust flow even seems more consistent. Belive it or not she is even listing slightly to the strb and I looked and while not as dramatic an issue, this side too is down a bit and some of the aluminum gussets screws are failing. I intend to do the same to this side.
So, obviously a design issue that any Series I 58MY owners should look at.
