What is the life expectancy of the turbo risers on a 8v71. Las year I had to replace one on the stub engine and yesterday I found that the port engine had developed a leak just below the flange that holds the turbo creating a real fire risk, it burned the wood of the companionway engine room door. After I took away the heat cover I noticed that the riser was shedding prices of rust. I inspected the other one and it was in the same state. The engines only have 550 hours since I overhauled them in 2006. Is there any type of fiber or fireproof epoxy that they can be encapsulated?

We're the risers replaced when you over hauled the engines? Just because the engines was rebuilt doesn't mean that new risers were installed. But they should definitely last more than 550 hours.

These are the dry risers and they are cast iron and last more than 5,000 hours with normal use. In 2006, Detroit Diesel lost their parts supplier for these parts and I do not know if they have a new one or parts available now, but back then the pipes were unavailable. There are some companies that make replacement pipes in stainless steel. The first sign of failure is usually carbon dust showing up on the insulation inside and at the edges, indicating pin holes in the pipe.
