  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
52' CONVERTIBLE (1983 - 1990)
"Moderate to high moisture intrusion in all longitudinal stringers and minor bulkheads"

So in my shopping for a boat I have now seen the above findings on a couple of previous purchase surveys that the current broker/owner shared as a part of the marketing of the boat.

On both of them, no swelling or cracking was found and tabbing was noted as being secure. Recommendation was annual monitoring.

Would you consider these boats and how would you proceed with that knowledge? A pre-purchase survey is a given.

Thanks

What does the broker have to say about this?

I haven't found any wood in the stringers and bulkheads. In replacing lines and running new lines through stringers and bulkheads, I havent seen any wood and they appear to be just fiberglass. All these boats are different, so dont take my word for it.

Hatteras? Or other make? Many others used wood in the stringers not Hatteras AFAIK

Hatteras doesn't use wood in stringers, so not as much of a worry. I have some water in mine as we opened them adding new trim tabs. The bigger question if standing water is there, where is it coming from?

We are talking Hatteras. Both of the boats I am referring to where old surveys on listed boats. Orginal survey recommend monitoring and keeping bilge dry. Broker further recommended speaking with original surveyor for questions. I didn't pursue them out of lack of understanding on my part.

Maybe the surveyor listed the specs wrong as wood cores FRP.

I remember a thread from years past where a surveyor had commented on the hull coring of a Hatteras that had no hull coring. Just saying.

I hate to say it because I are one but some surveyors put comments in their surveys like monitor this or possibly a problem when they don’t have enough knowledge to know for sure that something is a problem. Research of a particular brands construction techniques is a valuable thing to do before you survey a boat. I like to know where and what type of coring was used and how stringers were constructed.
