Hatteras Model
36' CONVERTIBLE-Series I (1969 -1977)
My boat has the original Kana Hi-Styles running lights (P & S, plus a Wilcox anchor/steaming light, plus a Perko stern light. Are LED replacements CG legal for these lamps, and does anyone know which LED bulbs are the ones to get, before I start taking everything apart?

Jim, give the guy at Marinebeam a call, he'll know and be honest with you too!

Jim....please let me know what you find out.......
I installed new red/green LED when I painted it, but need LED bulb for stern.
Thanks!

The stern light on my 36C is a Perko, it's rectangular and mounts to the transom right under the cockpit coaming. I've kept it that way because I was too lazy to fill in the large rectangular hole that Hatteras made for it (not needed, by the way; it could almost surface mount) So, since Perko still make the same light, I fitted a new one today.

The bulb that it takes is a single-wire festoon bulb. I decided to replace that with an eight-LED panel festoon bulb from Superbrightled. com. Not expensive, the price has gone down on these, I think it was about eight bucks. I did have to take the lamp housing apart and grind one of the bulb holders a bit, so the LED panel festoon bulb would fit in there. Works very well, much brighter than the old ones, which I've kept as a spare.

The last two are the anchor and white running light. I have the bulbs- I think- might tackle that tomorrow.

Even measuring and looking at the drawings on Superbrightled.com doesn't always ensure that the LED bulb will fit. They don't seem to come in standard dimensions and part numbers, like the old incandescent bulbs did, so it's kind of a crapshoot. But when I'm done, hopefully I've have converted all of them to LEDs, which require a lot less maintenance and are brighter in the bargain.

Beware of the led replacements not meeting coast guard standards.

There is a different requirement for boats under 12 meters. (39 foot)

Many of the led lamps do not meet the requirements for larger vessels.

I just replaced a steaming anchor light on a 50 footer with an LED. not cheap or easy to find local. I believe it was aquasignal commercial line.

About 6 years back, when our boat was repainted, I installed Hella 3 Nautical Mile navigation lights. My disappointment is the white finish on the exterior just evaporated in the natural light. It did not peel, just disappeared such that now the fixtures are a medium gray color. They appear as if this was the original color so I just tolerate them. As for light output, they are very bright.

Theses exceed USCG requirements for boats 65' and under and are good to 165' except for the masthead light which must be 5 nautical miles.

The only lights on board I wouldn't worry about not refitting with LED are the running lights. When running there's plenty of DC power.

Right. I wanted them to be brighter, and also to last longer. I realize that not all LED bulbs are type-approved. But they are catching up.

Agreed, I swapped my anchor light bulb and no improvement in terms of brilliance. A disappointment.

I paid more, I'll try it. Thanks l'll let you know how it works out.
