I was contemplating on replacing my nav lights with LED lights. I keep burning out bulbs and the current ones seem to rust too fast. Any ideas on a source, style ect for the grren, red, stern and allaround lights? Opinions on LED?

Thanks

Here's a good one. All the multi-million $ 70 foot racing sailboats are replacing ALL lights with LEDs. They are able to seriously reduce the current drain, which lenghtens the time between running the engine for charging. They also find they can save over one hundred pounds of wiring as they can replace all their light wiring with much smaller stuff. Neat eh??

All the nav lights on the "Mikey likes it!" are LED, they are very bright and I love the fact that I won't have to touch any of them for years. One less headache and well worth the upgrade. M

Have any of you guys used the LED bulbs that go inside the standard lights and what do you all think of them? I still have the original Kana lamps on Blue Note and would like to keep them, but bulbs have a hard and short life in those fixtures (as do the sockets as well) and I am thinking about the LED units. Anyone tried these?

Yes Jim, WE have replaced the std running lights on the sailboat I race on wit
h LED bulbs and they work great with less draw.

I've been thinking about changing my engine room lights to LED lighting. Would anyone know if this is an approved replacement for the explosion resistant fixtures required with incandescant bulbs. I'm tired of banging my head on those beasts.

What do you guys think about moving the red and green lights up to my new hardtop? Only problem is then I have to gelcoat the holes shut where they are installed now.

I would not move them. Why make more work for yourself?

LED lights are great for colored lights at night or expensive flashlights, but they don't output enough light to really replace conventional lights, unless you pay unbelieveably high prices. They just haven't developed them bright enough yet. But stay tuned; in the last year, they've enhanced brightness enough to make really good flashlights. Maybe in the next few years. For running lights, they're perfect.
