I started a new post so as to not radically hijack the retirement post...

"The Lectra/San is legal in most navigable and coastline areas where salt water is available and a tidal flow in and out exists. "

As you noted, it all depends on whether you are in a NDZ or not. If you are, you CAN'T dump with or without a waste treatment system. If you are NOT in a NDZ or similarly designated restricted area, you CAN dump waste with or without a waste treatment system. The info on Lectra san's website is just a general statement about the type of waters that are usually not restricted but they should state: "Check your local regulations," because some specific such waters could be restricted per state/local/federal regs. For example, in the Connecticut waters of LI sound, waste dumping is not permitted, but in the NY waters of LI sound, it is...go figure.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that having a waste treatment system doesn't allow you to dump somewhere that you can't anyway - at least so far as I know.

I was very impressed with this system. I am a fan of Raritan and have their Atlantis heads in my boat but this system was a whole different level of engineering and construction. All stainless and powdercoated.

It is a German company called Hamann AG. I have not pulled the trigger yet but am thinking next winter may be the time.

It looks like a fancier version of the Galleymaid system which does the same thing - adds chlorine to the waste. The GM system doesn't require any power other than the head pump which is already there with a GM pump. However, the GM system probably only works with GM heads so I don't think it's useful for other systems. But it's an extremely simple system that works quite well - just put in some calcium hypo swimming pool tabs every few months.

We had the 'san on the forward head and still have GM systems on the other two heads.

One thing you need to know about 'sans is that if you forget to open the discharge seacock - after winterizing for example - and you flush the the head, the pressure from a GM head pump will blow the 'san apart! How I know this should be obvious without the need for me to provide the rather messy details! :)

In my case, at the moment, I have removed the head that we're thinking about installing the Electra San unit on so my options are wide open...
Also, I'm less than a 1/2 mile from the St Mary's Inlet so have very salt water !!!!
And the unit does meet the requirements for dumping in this area....
I will leave the forward head "as is" so it pumps into the holding tank should we go into a "no dump zone"...

Hopefully you were not standing next to it when it blew .

Reminds me of the time I was hauled out at Bradfords when they hauled this 100 ft antique yacht and put it next to me. The crew stayed aboard on the hard and someone forgot to turn off the macerator ejection pump.

Not sure what it had in it... but that thing had a 2 1/2 inch through hull and shot a stream of poop 20 feet across the yard and stucco'd a freshly painted Burger (had a weird green and tan paint job.) There was a good bit of yelling going on that day.

No I wasn't. The 'san was in the genny compartment (under the galley). I flushed the forward head and heard a "WHUMP!" kind of sound from under the floor. "Uh, oh... that didn't sound good," was my reaction. To be honest, it wasn't all disgusting because the head/'san had been winterized/flushed with pink AF. So AF with a faint smell of chlorine was blasted all over the compartment as well as some lectrasan pieces...but nothing worse.

Those GM pumps can generate some impressive volume/pressure!
