  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
61' MOTOR YACHT (1980 - 1985)
Has anyone tried a dish network receiver other than the 211 with a KVH m5/m7? I want pause and Dvr functionality onboard. I have heard that the 211 can support a hard drive with some of that functionality but haven’t tried that yet.

I m not familiar with Dish but with DirectTV as long as you can run a second feed to the receiver you can't have DVR functions. Basically a DVR aka nothing more than two receivers in one box.

Yes - I have DISH 211’s and the KVH M7. I plugged a 2 terabyte hard drive into the back of the dish box with USB (no separate power source even though the DISH documentation said that may not work), and it only required a quick set up, and a call to DISH to activate it. I think there was a small charge for that. It works so well I added a another hard drive to another box. Full DVR capability. 2TB was the max, so that is what I bought. Under $100 for the hard drives.

Thanks guys. I'll try the drive update. I also just picked up a 211z receiver which i think has a newer / better UI. My buddy had one on his Tiara with a TV3 and i was impressed with the UI and small form factor of that receiver. I may put the 211 down in the VIP and run with the 211z upstairs. I'll let you know how it goes.

I have 2 - 211k’s and 2 - 211z’s on board. Yes, the z is smaller and sleeker, but it does not have an antenna plug ,which was a big deal for us for local channels.that is why we kept 2 of the k’s. Good luck.

I have a couple of questions about this process. Can it be done with a KVH m5, can any 1tb usb hard drive be used and what does the setup entail? We recently learned that our KVH M5 can be upgraded with a new board to allow it connect with all 3 satellites and since we currently have a Dish 211 receiver we also want to add DVR capability.

    Kvh M5 yes.

I used a 2TB and it worked fine. The one I used did not have external power. I have a large form factor grey 211 receiver and not the smaller 211z. You need to call them to enable this for a one time fee of 40$. Its account wide allegedly so you can have more than one receiver with a drive attached.
  • With regards to the upgrade it costs about 700 for the board. The board you need is called the "RF7" . It shipped with the M5 and M7 after sometime in October 2013. Here is the bulletin:
Technical Bulletin
Date:

Subject: Changes to Tracking Parameters of DISH Network’s 110°W and 119°W Satellites
Products Affected
Marine Systems: TracVision® C3, 4, 6, G4, G6, G8, M5, M7, and M9
RV Systems: TracVision L3, S3, R4, R5, R4SL, and R5SL
Problem Description
DISH Network® has changed the left-hand (LHCP) tracking transponders of its 110°W and 119°W satellites from QPSK to 8PSK encoding. As a result, DISH Network subscribers with the above referenced TracVision systems might need to choose an alternate LHCP tracking transponder as described below.
Problem Solution – TracVision M5, M7, and M9 Models
Systems Equipped with an RF7 Board
Antennas with an RF7 board installed can decode 8PSK signals. KVH started building antennas with the RF7 board in October 2013. However, all antennas built from January 2009 through October 2013 can be upgraded in the field. KVH recommends the RF7 board upgrade kit be installed in all antennas that can be upgraded in order to avoid additional tracking parameter limitations in the future.

One other thing, when you do the board upgrade you need the pc serial port adapter and the flash update wizard to run commands. If you have a MCP that also needs to be updated using a specific cable that comes with the MCP.

The cheapest way to get this working is to call KVH to order the part and get support on this. I have heard some stories from folks who have had local dealers do this and have ended up with some hefty labor bills.

X2 - exactly.

KVH was unwilling to take the job and directed me to Buddy Dean the local KVH rep here in JAX. The price for the pcb must have gone up since I was quoted $800 for the part by KVH. I’ll get a labor quote before we begin, thanks.

Yeah it may have been closer to 800 with shipping and what not. I also bought the receiver selector which was a bit more.

If you get stuck PM me. I know way more about the M5/M7 dishes than I ever wanted to know :)

My old receipt says: $729.75 (the RF7 board for the M7).
