Kimmen will be missed

November 30, 2007
Capt. Ed Kimmen was a skilled offshore angler who was happiest helping others catch fish.

"He loved to catch them and he loved to watch other people catch them," Ed Feduik said.

Kimmen, 56, died in his sleep on Thanksgiving Day. His wife, Trish, had died Oct. 30 after battling cancer.

Feduik, who works at Ray's Offshore Tackle in Boca Raton where Kimmen did much of his shopping, said his longtime friend probably died from a broken heart.

"He was totally distraught about it," said Don Marks of Boynton Beach, Kimmen's friend of 31 years.

Kimmen, of Boca Raton, ran charters on his 28-foot Hydra-Sports Find-A-Fish as well as on Old Hatt, a Hatteras that he kept in Islamorada.

He caught everything from kingfish to swordfish, but he was known for his ability to catch big yellowtail snapper and dolphin off Palm Beach County. Feduik said that the Tuesday before he died, Kimmen and Capt. Jamie Ralph caught a 40-pound dolphin.

Kimmen grew up in Michigan and was around boats at an early age. He moved to Boca Raton in 1974 and got into real estate. He had a real estate agency and owned warehouses, commercial properties and a small apartment complex. He became a charter captain in 1995.

"We had a lot of fun fishing out there together," Feduik said. "The first time he took me out, we went out with his dog Ranger. Every fish we brought in the boat, the dog picked it up, brought it to the front of the boat and waited for someone to open the cooler."

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Advent Lutheran Church, 300 E. Yamato Road, Boca Raton. Donations can be made in Kimmen's memory to Hospice by the Sea of Boca Raton.

Wow! Just kinda goes to show how a couple can start off as friends and lovers, and then over the course and time become inseparable.

Sure hope they are both together again, and on fair seas with gentle winds, forever.
