Hatteras Model
36' CONVERTIBLE-Series I (1969 -1977)
Recently I had reason to tighten up my rudder stuffing boxes, the port one seemed to be leaking more than ever. Upon further inspection it seems the bras bolts and huts had corroded awway leaving the rudder bearing block swinging in the wind. This in turn caused the rudder port tube to crack.
I replaced it this past week in about 5 hours time with a nice new rudder port from Buck -Alaqaclon. I even bought another to rplace the STB one this winter.
This is just one more thing to check. However there is no more water in my bilge other than the air conditioner.

Unreal ! I just noticed the same thing while underway last Saturday.

Fortunately, no damage but the nuts either corroded or vibrated off and the hold down plate was rattling in place.

As Captain Ron says: "Need to get that fixed, boss"

was everything bonded ? I have seen some rudders bonded but not the through hull fitting. no metal contact since there is packing. make sure everyting is bonded.

Everything was bonded, and is bonded, just 36 years of use.
