No, not my mind, that's a given just ask the Admiral. (Pot, kettle and all that but I digress.)

The boat lists to port. It has had it to varying degrees since I've owned it. The other day with the 360 pound port battery bank out and the new 480 pound one sitting by the SB door it was actually almost gone. But now the new (heavier) bank is in place and the list is back worse than ever.

Now, the washer is out, and there's a new 150 pound washer goin into the SB location. Also, the mid cabin closet has been my tool storage and that is going above the new washer so that's at least 350 pounds that will get added to SB. If it needs more I'll add some lead.

Of course all you have to do is fill the small waste tank (60 gallons is 500 pounds) and it's almost gone too. The ONLY tank not on centerline.

So I'm working on it. But here's the interesting part. I've now measured the list on numerous locations in the boat and the range is 0.7º to 2.5º I know, not every counter top is level relative to the ship but there is a definite trend in the numbers stern to stem. The high readings are all in the back. Master stateroom, aft head, aft deck. The stern seen from a distance shows the swim platform several inches out of whack. But the front end of the boat is a lot better. galley, galley roof, fore deck, forward cabin are all under 1º

So it appears the boat is slightly twisted. Now, I don't expect anything that's 50 years old to be perfectly straight anymore, but I'm wondering if it was on purpose for any reason.

Thoughts?

Years ago there was a 1920's Dawn Classic 45' (wooden) Commuter that had some major structural work done with the boat on the hard. The majority of the repair involved adding "sister" ribs for a significant length of the boat. Unfortunatly, no one looked her over as to her blocking to see if she was "true" on the blocks. As it turns out she was not. She was fully sister framed with a twist in the hull. When she was relaunched, she seemed to have a Starboard list when viewing from the bow. From the stern, the list was decidedly to Port. Going forward she was known locally as "The Twisted Sister" Now back to your regularly scheduled Thread.

Our boat developed a slight list, I am suspecting that water is seeping into a stringer by way of a corroded screw . We are taking the boat out of the water during hurricane season do do much needed maintenance. I will know more then and report on the situation.

I thought the boat felt weird when I was visiting yesterday, but I didn't want to say anything.

Ok after some coffee my brain kicked in and I went outside. At the chines she’s 2 inches lower on port side stem to stern. So disregard the twisted interior for now. I keep a dry bilge. But the water in the stringer idea has crossed my mind. Any reason not to drill an inspection hole say engine room mid engine?

You can , but be able to pump the water out , and to quickly plug the hole . I have tried to get any screw/ screw hole in a bilge area or shower sump fiberglassed over. Usually if you keep a dry bilge this is not a problem. But the shower sumps always have water and a corroded screw eventually will corrode away. As the sumps are fiberglassed in , the screws are superfluous anyway.

So continuing this train of thought..... Does anyone know whether the stringer is continuous or whether it is partitioned? Also, is it hollow or was it formed around something?

Dear Hatteras Owners Forum,In addition to Tech Talk and Everything Else categories, there is now a pressing need for a Stream of Consciousness section. Thank you.

My stringer seems to be formed around foam . My guess is that it is continuous.

Dynamic problem solving man, it works.

Well, if there's foam in there there's no room for hundreds of pounds of water.

The stringers have closed cell foam inside. No worries there. You could have some water outside a stronger section but I doubt it would be much as the hull is pretty flat on the outside

Thanks. Back to adding weight on SB.

On principle, I would say that drilling a hole anywhere in a boat which is in the water is not a good idea. I think I'd wait until the next haulout. Or the one after that.

I have friends with other Hatteras , sport fishers or convertibles that developed a list , it’s coming from somewhere. Closed cell foam or not , water is getting in .

Has any one contacted the Army Corp of Engineers, maybe the water is twisted. The great lakes seem to be very flat at the moment.

I have a spot on the wood to cover in the salon and an inclinometer would look nice. I'm surprised all my fancy electronics don't have one in there already.

Antique or digital? https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2334524.m570.l1313&_nkw=ship+inclinometer&_sacat=0&LH_TitleDesc=0&_odkw=ship+inclinometer&_osacat=0

I like this one: https://www.stanleylondon.com/solid-brass-pendulum-inclinometer.html

With a list to SB from the genny and 8 batts for the SB bank on that side, I'll slowly take it back to flat as things change. The tower makes it more noticable.
