  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
45' CONVERTIBLE-Series I (1968 - 1975)
There have been so many threads on here concerning which product to use on our wood that I'm really lost!!! There are so many different ways to go about "doing it" to our wood that I really don't know which way to go.

I have on order from Sam's Imron 704C, which I've been told is a copy product of the original stain/varnish, whatever, that was used on our boats at the factory. So my question is, why don't all of you wood wizards use the same stuff that Hatt did? What gives?

I need straightening out...again....:o

I think it depends on the look that you want. Some like it original (like me) and others like the high gloss varnish look.

I like the minwax tung oil because it is so easy to use - just wipe on and wipe off. Add as many coats as you want to achieve whatever gloss level you want. Scuff the surface initially with a green 3m pad and wipe on a coat each day until it's what you want. No additional scuffing between coats is necessary. A bit of minwax red mahogany stain in the tung oil will help with faded areas as well.

Use the Sams stuff- its all how you apply it- applied with a rag like the Oil and the finish will be flat- applied with a high dollar brush like varnish, and it will gloss up- whichever you like

I have a 36c 1971 the original coating was a pettit product
stain 530
sealer 008
enamel 153
varnish 046
so what does this mean for me my walls are gloss. was this original? and is there a subsitute for this i have to touch some things up.

I also have a gallon of the original finish material (Dupont 703 I think) and I did try it on some new wood and was very unhappy as it came out much too dark. I tried various materials and techniques and for my taste, I like the look of MinWax satin finish polyurathane. The first coat on bare wood (sanded to at least 400 grit or smoother followed in several days by a light sanding and then a spray coat of the same material. In order to make life easy MinWax provides the material in brushable cans or spray cans. The finish is fine and stays fairly light. Another benefit is that if you inadvertantly scratch it, the remedy is as simple as original finish. Usually a coat of furniture polish is all that is necessary to hide any scratches and since the base coat is Polyurathane, the application of furniture polishes or other oils don't soak into the wood and darken it.

I second the use of tung oil. What could be easier, no paint cans to contend with, no brushes to clean, no big deal. I put a coat on at any time I have nothing to do, just pop open the can, soak a rag, and apply. throw rag away close lid, another coat applied. If it's not shiny enough ,do again when I feel like it.

What are you gonna do with the 704? I bet you could find a buyer here if you can't use it.

We had a wall mirror break as result of a haul out early 2005. No use arguing over it's installation (by the factory) or the proper blocking of the boat (boat yards can do no wrong you know). As it may, this left me with a wall stained like the others but with many blotches of adhiesive that looked like roof patch. After much sanding I applied an oil furnished by Sams. Played hell trying to get it to match the rest of the interior - which it never did (brush on, wipe on, you name it).

I am not very experienced in this sort of thing (though I have had great successes in other finishing projects) and it's great to get the input from other Hatteras owners. Plan B, I think I will try the tung oil thing. Ultimately I hope to get the entire interior refinished in a lighter cherry finish. Right now it resembles a drab old english funeral parlor. It should have pews. What were the people in the 80's thinking?

Sky.....

I will look for the can (I think it's at my shop). If I find it you can have it if you wish, if not anyone else on this forum may have it. Naturallly N/C.

Sky, I thought I'd take a look down in the basement just in case the 704 was there. Well it was and is.... If you would like it call me at 732-991-5665 so we can figure out how to get it to you.... Walt.

Thanks Walt. I would like to give that stuff a try on my window sills in the salon that have faded. I will call you with my info.
