Insurance self survey

My insurance is Charter Lakes as agent and Markel as carrier. I was recently requested to self survey the boat for them. Various questions about the boat, mostly with a yes or no answer. Some pointed questions on physical updates and berthing in and out of season. Also required was digital photos of overall exterior, bilges, stuffing boxes, helms, salon, galley and surprising but fully understand why male and female ends of shore power cords. They even wanted me to appraise the value! They accepted my self survey with the comment that it all looked good. I would have thought the industry would be going in the opposite direction as to requiring more stringent surveys. this seems just the opposite.

I have had to do the "self survey" several times over the last 10 years. One of the photos requested was of the fuel tank.

Had to recently (two years ago) do that for a new house, but never for the boat.

Provide their contact information! Insurance companies that understand the older boats are priceless!

Sometimes on a renewal they will ask for that, but never on new business they will want a Sams or nams surveyor
