Hatteras Model
40' DOUBLE CABIN-Series I (1986 - 1989)
I plan to install a 2000 amp inverter/charger in my 40' DC. I am under the impression that I will be able to easily service one side of the AC bank of circuits with the inverter (thats all I would need - particularly the ice maker side). Does anybodey see a problem with this application or have any pointers regarding same?

Been much yadayada on this type of post in the past, so should be other threads to review...and I did a lot of the yada'ing...

12 volt system, say 1500-2000 watt ac. Connected to "house" batteries (2 group eight, plan to switch to AGMs in future), casual usage not prolonged - mainly keep icemaker running while underway (a G/T without ice in no G/T). Also may power small appliance while at anchor momentarily, don't want to fire up noisey genset just to heat up a pizza or run coffee maker.

What am I doing wrong (besides owning 2 boats)?

it all depends on the inverter and how it needs to be set up. some have built in automatic transfer switch others need to be connected as a separate power source, replacing your 2 way rotary with a 3 way.

there has been many threads on inverters in the past... i installed a freedom 30 almost a year ago and love it. reasonably priced, built in transfer switch, etc.. it powers part of the Ship Service leg, easy to install.

no problem feeding one leg of your panel with the inverter, you will also need to split your neutrals in case they are all mixed up like they were on my boat. no big deal but ti takes a little time to sort them out...
