Does any one know if a 54 hatt motor yacht engine room vents are larger than a 53 motor yachts vents? I have a friend with a 53 and he thinks that the 53 vents are not getting a enough air to the engines. He thought that the 54 vents might be larger and if he replaced them with the he larger vents the Engels would run a little better? Any thoughts would be appreciated . Thanks

Where would he get 54MY vents? If he buys the 54 to get the vents, he might just as well keep the whole thing intact and use it. :)

He knows a great fiberglass guy that will make them for him.

If the guy will make bigger vents, then he should just make them. What does the 54 have to do with it if he is not using 54 vents?

A better way to approach this might be to measure barometric pressure in the engine rooms with both engines running at cruise speed under load. I would think that if it is less than atmospheric then he does need larger vents. Hatteras designers were pretty good at working this stuff out. I believe there are also formulas used in repowers that allow you to calculate the amount of intake air area for a given horsepower rating. This might be a good thing to ask about on Boatdiesel.com. I would do that research before I invested in new vents.

Jim I totally agree with you. I've been on many 53 footers and have not found the lack of ventilation a problem in anyone of them.

Sounds a little fishy. And it's a my. The vents should be sized correctly for the engines hatteras installed. If there was a repower there may be a need for more air. FWIW if they repowered with 4 strokes they are probably more than adequate.
