Info needed on Cummins 903

I'm looking at a 43' 1977 Hatteras with Cummins 903 engines, 340 hp with 2500 hrs. Does anyone know about the 903's? Good or bad? I've Googled it, but not coming up with much except that they are no longer manufactured and parts are hard to come by. Also, any info on fuel comsumption? Thanks, Karl

Use the search feature on this site. Lots of previous discussion here on 903's. Also try Boatdiesel.com Make sure that the engines you're looking at are indeed 903's and not VT370M's which are 785 cu in. instead of 903. They are similar, but not the same engine.

903's are big heavy reliable beasts if they have not been run at high RPM's all their life. I have heard parts are very expensive....check locally on parts avilability with whoever would do work for you...that could be a deal breaker....
