Changed out the packing yesterday to the new graphite stuff. As you can see not a lot of water comes in during the process.

The old ones take some doing to get out. Tha packing removal cork screw tends just to rip out most times Long picks are a must. I cut the ends on a 45 so they seal

It’s scary doing it the first time but soon you realize it’s really easy. I’ve had great luck with the cork screw packing removing tool.

Even got the water to flow upside down. Tap each ring in with the gland and brass hammer. 2” shafts 1/2” packing 5 rings

I've done the rudders in the water. Is there more water intrusion on the shafts? I have heard there is, but we just did ours when we were out of the water.

Side note: What is the typical replacement interval for packing? Obviously it depends on use, but I'm curious how much time you folks are getting out of our shaft and rudder packing.

Thanks for the great information. I'm about to replace my packing and was curious which of the Garlock graphite packing you used? 1333-G, G-200, or style 1306? And where did you purchase?
