Hatteras Model
61' MOTOR YACHT (1980 - 1985)
OK guys, I know this has been yakked about in the past, but now I need your best advice. I would like to have the Imron paint on my 1984 61FBMY buffed to restore a better shine. The local contractor wants to use a 3M product 'Perfect-It' then seal it with Meguir's Flagship Wax, which apparently isn't really a wax, rather a polymer of some type. His price seems fair, but I don't want to goof up future maintenance requirments.

I had requested his quotation using 3M Finesse-It II as I have seen several Hatteras yachts where this was used and they looked great.

I have always believed Imron should only be buffed, when needed, but never sealed or waxed. This guy claims to be a pro at buffing/waxing Hatteras yachts and the local yard recommends him and his work - and the yard is a Hatteras dealer.

What do you guys recommend?

I just hauled last week and used 3M Finesse-It II. No wax just Finesse-It II. Do a search, it has been talked about a lot. I don't THINK you put wax on Imron.

I agree with Mambeaux, I just use Finesse-It II, no wax or polymer sealant. Shine is acceptable to me.

Also, newer Hatts use Alexseal I think, that might need to be treated differently.

I'm not really convinced that any of the methods/process are bad, just different and in cost....but I just might be starting another highly opinionated thread!

I would ask to see some of his work. If it is the Hatteras dealer I think it is, they wouldn't recommend a hack. You won't hurt the Imron by waxing it, but it isn't necessary.

Use 3M product you mentioned first as apposed to finesse-it with better results. In my opinion, never put wax on Imiron

I would not tell the "professional" how to do his job. Let him use his formula and see how it turns out. He can't hurt the Imron for any future work. That stuff is indestructible.
