  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
43' DOUBLE CABIN (1970 - 1984)
I have the "large" Jabsco impeller puller from West Marine (286880) that worked OK on our J&T 6-71s but won't grasp the huge impellers in a friends 8-71s. I'm not finding any pullers at Jabscoshop.com but I've missed things online before. Anyone care to share their successes in pulling really big impellers? Thanks, Craig

Two screwdrivers work on my 1271's.

That puller will work. I have the same one and it works on all DD's I've ever used it on including 6v92's, 8v71's, and 12v71's

What Sky said! I use that same puller on our 8V71Tis. Works fine. You just need tighten the arms sufficiently.

OK, confidence restored, will give them another try. Thank you all.

Ok Craig let's give it another try tomorrow.

Please send the twenty.

Craig, next time line it up with a tape measure. This is a tough crowd.

Success! Had to get down and dirty using pliers on thumbknobs (metalshop instructor glaring from his grave) to tighten the puller jaws enough to grip the impeller. Thanks again, also whoever recommended using tie wraps to partially compress the new impeller to ease installation was very helpful in this very crowded area of a 8-71TII...."If at first you don't succeed, keep on sucking till you do suck seed" - Curly Howard 1936

I've had to tighten this puller so hard on my 8V71 that I've cracked the plastic handles on the jaws. It works, but the puller could be better made for the price? Jon

Mine usually come out pretty easily. How long are they in there to be so hard to remove?

Unknown, have had our boat 1 year. Mine came right out, neither previous owner going back ten years claimed to have replaced them. On our friends formerly professionally maintained 53' they've had a couple years, they were a hard pull but were in nearly perfect condition once we got them out. That's one my impellers pictured, they both looked like hell but were still moving water. I'm planning on changing them every two years. Regards, Craig

And probably all of those missing pieces are stuck in your fuel cooler, heat exhanger, and/or showerhead.

I ve used the same puller on 1400hp cats, impellers are bigger and it worked.

Some impellers have a threaded hole so you can put in a bolt and use a wrench to pull th impeller out. That's the best way to do it

I pulled all the impeller material from the fuel cooler and even with those chewed up impellers we weren't seeing any temps over 160. I don't believe anything significant made it through the fuel cooler. Here's a link to an earlier post with pics and comments.
