  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
53' MOTOR YACHT (1969 - 1988)
Well,

Very long, sad, pathetic story...but I'm back in MD. Not sure how many of you herd, but I left a high paying career level position in IT go live the dream and move to Belize and work for a resort developer. I got recruited by one of our friends...I got royally screwed. Basically the guy I went to work for is schizophrenic. He's a multi-millionaire land/resort developer who had a tiny fragile ego. Before I was even hired, he had the idea to build some 53' passenger ferries from some hull molds he bought on eBay. Well, when I got down there...that became MY project. Turns out that the hull molds he bought were super high performance yacht hulls, not passenger carrying hulls. He ASSUMED that the 53' mold being sold by the company was just a smaller version of the 63' ferry hull that they had in current production because he didn't know JACK SHIT about boats. Literally, nothing. He couldn't see the difference between a high performance stepped hull and a wide low load-carrying hull...so obvious to ANYONE who knows ANYTHING about boats. So, I wrote up a proper executive update and presented it to him...the molds were useless for this application without substantial modification and building the boats for $125,000 USA including engines/drives was out of the question. What did he do? Shoot the messenger...fired me and then wanted me to sign a non-disclosure agreement. When I told him I refused, he threated me with saying things like "you don't know who you are fucking with and you do NOT want to end up in a 3rd world prison for the weekend". So, Amanda and I let him know we didn't want any trouble and would be gone by Monday. That was Saturday morning...we hopped a Saturday afternoon plane out of the country. Turns out he had plans to have us stopped at the border Monday but didn't have time to get it all done before we sneaked out of the country...very lucky on or part. so...I'm jobless and out tens of thousands of dollars including lost wages and moving expenses...sigh...this sucks...

That is a damn shame. Glad you are back in one piece and not in some hellhole.

Gee stormy, you mean you couldn't dazzle him with all the charm and grace you've shown on this forum? LOL

I'm sorry to hear about your problems, I really am, but I just couldn't pass that one up. :D

Don't mind Randy...... None of the rest of us do....
You tried to live your dream and reality shot you down.....
But I am betting your boat has both motors running

Don't worry Charlie, stormy and I have more history than what's on this forum. He'd expect nothing less from me and knows I'm just breaking his balls.

BTW, that engine comment was totally uncalled for. My feelings are hurt and we are no longer friends despite your recent admission that you are a closet Vols fan.

Dave,

That is simply HORRIBLE! I am terribly sorry that you have had to deal with this. This is something that will scar you for LIFE.

Honestly, Ambergris Cay is one of several places on our "Exit Strategy" list and I had hoped to consult you and eventually possibly meet up with you down there when the time comes. Of course if I am heading there I will still consult you to get your overall opinion of Belize and the general area, but also to learn who to stay the hell away from!

I am very glad to hear that you and Amanda have survived such an incident and with (relatively) small financial losses, although the emotional and psychological scars will far outlast the financial sting.

Hang in there, get back in your groove, and see if you can get your old job back. If not, send your resume to everyone as if you had never left and were simply looking for a better job. Fortunately you have not been gone long enough to make a significant difference in your carreer and I doubt many people in your field actually know that you ever left.

GOOD LUCK!!!!

Thanks all. We definitely consider ourselves lucky. Financially it's not devastating...pisses me off but not going to really hurt in the long run...and we are very lucky to have gotten out when we did...another day or two and I likely would have been thrown in jail for a while. Remember, they use British law...guilty until proven innocent. The smartest thing we did was decide to NOT sell anything until we had been down there at least a year...so we were able to come back to the boat, cars, and other play toys. The nice thing about being unemployed for a while...the boat project lsit is shirnking rapidly...I may even have time to varnish the hand rails rather than jsut strip them an let them gray.

Oh, yes, I have 2 working engines...they started up with less than 3 seconds of cranking after sitting for over a month.

Just had to rub it in, didn't you?

Sorry. :P What was the end result of your mechanic looking at the dead engine? Somehow I missed it...

jUST REMEMBER IT IS NOT THE COUNTRY BUT YOUR EX EMPLOYER THAT CREATED THE PROBLEM

So, no non-disclosure... Who the heck is he? Also, Glad you guys made it back!!

I'm trying to find someone, a lawyer, to send him a settlement offer before I disclose his name or the name of the business. I don't want to take him for anything or cause him any problems, but I think he should pay me back for what I lost because of him, which is about $20,000. So, for $20k, his secrets can remain so for ever.

Sounds like you need someone with more "finesse" than a lawyer. Get yourself a thug and no translation will be necessary.

Who was it that threatened to come up to Annapolis and beat me over the head with a crank-shaft when I first joined HOF? Maybe he wants a job... hahahahaha!!!!

How much does it pay?

Can I beat you more than once?

That really sucks but you guys really are lucky. I know of others who have had it worse and for a longer period of time.

Glad he showed his colors early on and you got out relatively unscathed!

Welcome back to the good old USofA! Not much has changed in the past month, by the way.

I'm surprised I would have thought you and a schizophrenic would have gotten along like 2 pees in a pod.

OR, you could send his Royal Birdness to cause at least one motor on any boat he might own to fail...probably works on Bentley engines, generators, a/c units big enough to warrant cooling towers...

Hey, I saw by stormy's link that I can stay at that place for free for 3 days if I let them give me their sales pitch. They'd probably pay me to leave after the 2nd day if I haven't lost that ole' magic.
