  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
52' CONVERTIBLE (1983 - 1990)
When I bought my boat, the windlass motor was missing.

The unit is an Ideal V5C and the previous mechanics had been in the process of removing it, right up the part where they drop it out of the deck. But the work done previously is pretty poor, so I doubt their capability--I may repair it in place.

So now I need to, at a minimum, buy a new motor and mounting plate to the gearbox from Ideal.

From examining the image below, are the engagement gears supposed to have the curve in them? Obviously if they are worn, I need to buy more parts. But if not, I may buy just the gear nose and plate and source a motor locally from my favorite electrical shop, and possibly upgrade to 24V. It looks chewed up to me, but I wanted to hear from someone who has seen inside.

Comments?

If it's a worm drive it would have a curve.

yes there is a worm gear next to it that can't be seen in the photo ......Pat

So far so good. How do the drive surfaces of the teeth look in person?

As an aside, all that rust suggests you have a leak in the fore deck. And that can also mean rot in the core. Worth checking before you get too far.
