  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
58' YACHT FISHERMAN (1970 - 1981)
I need to replace my ULine icemaker. I looked in the Lewis catalog & they have the ULine & Icer-Ette. I'm not impressed with the ULine I've had. Any thoughts about the Icer-Ette or the best place to buy either one?

Do you at least buy wholesale from lewis? If not PM me.

Tom,

why do you find it necessary to replace your icemaker? What exactly is it doing (or not doing)? If I'm not mistaken some of the parts are common refergration components and are easily replaced.

Uline type icemakers in themselves are ridiculously expensive. I sincerely hope that info from this Forum can save you from replacing the whole unit.

I have receipts from the P.O. for over 1K to repair a $600 ice maker (U-line) and it was suggested he replace it (1 year old at the time)(1990). I turned the breaker on and NOTHING. Does it need water pressure to make cold air?
Out junking one day, as I like to do, I came across a U-line on the pile. I grabbed it for parts. Needs a bottom grill cover. I hooked it up, H2o and electric and she made a hundred pounds of ice for me! Go figure.
Bid on another on ebay --started at $20. Before it was done it sold at 275.
Homo Depot has a top loader for about 250. I happen to like the front loaders.
I guess Ill hafta fix the original so I have TWO ice makers on board. How tough can it really be?? ws

In previous posts here I have read that the real problem is finding a replacement icemaker which will fit in the built-in hole in our bars and that does not require a drain.

I am on about my third U-Line now. The early ones did not last very long. However, each later model had significant improvements over its predecessor. My current one has gone about 20 years and has been great! The ice is about zero degrees (F), rock hard and just right for the Captain's Martini. I do turn it off when we are not on board, which is about 9 months per year so it really only has about 5 years of wear on it. Many of the drain-type icemakers depend on the older ice melting in order to keep fresh, so temperature is only about 32 degrees. Fine for an ice pack, but not a martini!

Our icemaker may be the most important device on board for maintaining crew happiness. I would try to repair the one you have. Make sure you get someone who knows U-Lines, however, as I have spent a lot of time trying to get the microswitches that time the water inflow adjusted correctly. (Very difficult to concentrate while rumbles of mutiny and threats of "The Plank" are heard from down below, intersperced with shouts of "Where's our ice?"!)

Let us know what brand you choose if you replace it.

I had two of these; a U-line, and a Raritan. I think the marine environment is uniquely adapted to bring out the worst in these appliances. Long periods of disuse followed by lots of use. Uh oh.

The Raritan was less problematic. You might see if Summit makes one- their stuff is better than the two mentioned above. Or (heresy) you might buy an ice chest. The ice will be cleaner, anyway. Good luck.
