  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
43' DOUBLE CABIN (1970 - 1984)
Has anyone out there ever had to fix a leaking steering box? I have a 1971 43DC single station.
I am on a trip [now in Punta Gorda] and need to get this fixed quickly.
Can I simply put in kit or need to send off to get rebuilt? Any ideas anyone??

That's the way I did it. Not to difficult

Don't know if you are in an area with lots of retired military, but here near Pax River there are a couple hydraulic shops run by ex military techs. They did a 2 day turn around for me a few years ago for next to nothing. Might ask around.

If it helps you, I'll send you a scanned copy of my Hynautic manual. It gives the procedure for bleeding etc. Send me a PM with your email address if the manual will help.

:) Thanks everyone --I did some research and you were all right--found a kit and put it in and we are smileing today. Many people including Teleflex were very helpful. The assembly looks intimidating but if you take your time and take the advice given you can do it yourself.

I am having the same problem mine started leaking last trip. Could I get a copy of the of the bleeding procedure I am going to have to rebuild before the 4th.

Thnaks, Ken

Hi all, I have an 87 41c that just started leaking hydraulic fluid at the helm. I would like to fix it but do not have any details on the procedure for bleeding, releasing the presssure and genrally not makinga huge mess. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

FWIW, you may find that it takes FAR more turns of the helm wheel in each direction to bleed the system than hynautic's instructions specify. So don't be surprised it the wheel doesn't firm up in the specified number of turns. Sometimes takes more than 100.

Yep.

But... it will firm up if you don't have any leaks.

I have a 1972 43' DCFB and the upper station was leaking at the station head, years ago. I requested the tech remove the leaking head and send to Hynautic. It has been 8-10 years and, since rebuilt, the Hyd fluid holds at 3" below the top of the Reservoir (the spec) and might lose 10#'s of pressure in two years. E.g., since last pumped to 30#'s, it has drifted to 20#'s over a two year period. I remove the Schrader valve screw on cap and apply a portable bicycle pump to increase the pressure to the 30# spec.

P.s., I do have a full Hynautic manual.

I do wish I had replaced/rebuilt all my steering hydraulic lines, since if one develops a hard bleed at the wrong time, you lose steering control. But, so far, I have not done so.

There is also the factory procedure on this site in the tan left-side navigation bar, under "Tips & Tricks".
