I've been pumping up my steering until I brought the boat back to the marina and it's time to get it fixed. I have fluid leaking around the cylinder and now need to rebuild. It seems straightforward in removing the cylinder, but before I start, I wanted to get some feedback from anyone who has tackled the job to ensure I don't miss anything. Thanks in advance.

I had a Stb/port valve fail in the main ram no leaks outside the pipes. I bought a new one for about $650. I will try to re-build the old one when I get a chance, but the old one was 35 years old and went around the world so I think I have some time on this one.

Today was a good day. Just removed the hydraulic ram and will be delivering to a shop nearby that specializes in Hynautic. I searched the forum and found some good advice in handling this type of job. Some great guidance there. We'll see when its time to install and bleed the system. Then I can use the hand pump for fenders or the bicycle.

Just took mine off not in bad shape but did notice a small amount of oil on the shelf. Since I hope to find somone to go south with me in october it's better to fix it now then fool around with it on the way down. Bill

I had mine rebuilt for $300 2 years ago. 6 months later, it started to leak again. So I paid $500 to get a new cylinder.

I delivered it to the shop this morning and they said the "wiper" seal around the piston rod was coming apart and was most likely the reason for the leak. They will rebuild for $140 and give me a year warranty. Hopefully this will solve my problems. The tech did say that if your rudders don't turn easily, it will put strain on the ram and will wear.

By the way Akin, that is an awesome job you did on the restoration and I can see it was a lot of work. Hope you are now enjoying the boat.

Another happy day. Picked up my steering RAM yesterday from the shop and got it installed today. The shop tech said the seals were pretty bad. Filled the system with oil, pumped it up and bled the lines and now the steering is so smooth, you can turn the steering wheel with one finger. Love it when things fall into place. Of course, there is always tomorrow.

Akin,
As I was researching"leaking hynautic cylinders",I ran across your post.I find myself in a similar situation with a leaking servo valve, & can't find one anywhere.I searced the internet without any success.Would you consider letting me know where you purchased the cylinder or valve that you needed.
I see you are from Chicago.I moore my boat at Burnham Harbor.

Thanking you
Kole
