  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
61' COCKPIT MY (1981 - 1985)
I am looking to purge and replace the fluid in my steering system. From what I have read the correct fluid is Hynautic fluid MIL-H-5606 spec. Does anyone know where to purchase this online?

Just FYI early systems used ATF that’s what’s in mine. It’s an inter web myth that ATF makes the steering harder to turn.

Support Sam's and this site.
Buy the fluid from Sam's.
In stock.

This is where I buy it. link

That's glycol for the engine contols. The OP asked for steering hydraulic fluid.

Here is the West Marine link for the steering fluid

But why pay $100/gallon when you can get the aviation fluid (which is the same stuff) for $65??

It's $35 a gallon. If the system leaks, it helps to be red. My wife once said, 'why is the boat bleeding?' Upper helm seal blew.

Someone used ATF in ours prior to our purchase. I swapped it out and things were MUCH better. Use the correct fluid!

Hey...that's where I found the specialty 8" bulb for my old spotlight. The 28v aircraft bulb was as close to 32v as I could get. https://www.aircraftspruce.com/search/search.php?s=landing bulb

How does it work? I would think it would be brighter than the rating but with a shorter lifespan. The standard 32v bulbs aren’t difficult to get, the division of ITT that made spotlights was bought by this company:

and they make them, sell them, and service them. I just had mine rechromed and the inner workings rebuilt as well as a new wiring harness because it wasn’t working right, and they did a great job. I bought a spare bulb from them to keep onboard, I think it was $90. They have some source to get them made. You can just call them and buy a replacement.

ut still curious how the 28v works.
