According to Weather Underground, the most expensive (in dollars) natural disaster in US history is Hurricane Katrina at a cost of $133.8 billion in 2005 with reported windspeeds of 175 mph. That amount is equivalent to the destruction of over one half million homes valued at $250,000 each.
In 2011 our federal government in DC reportedly blew over $1.5 trillion, expanding our debt accordingly. $1.5 trillion is eleven times more damage than Hurricane Katrina, and the DC storm does not appear to have yet diminished in its intensity.
