I have recently purchased a 1975 58YF. I'm wondering what is the weight limit on the davits that Hatteras originally installed on these boats? I think I have an original winch, but I'm concerned about davit structure itself. I know the winches have their lift limits, but I want to know what the davit limit is because I can always put a heavier winch on. Is there a structural limit on the davit's arms? I would appreciate any info on this.

we will need to know what brand and model to help out with this question. i dont think hatteras used any specific brand or model...... they installed what the customer wanted, or it could have been installed by the owner

Hey Big Bill , what year is your 58yf ?

Be sure to check the wire rope from end to end; when I bought my Viking, the davit was tested by the surveyor with no problem. 2 weeks later on the trip home, and several liftings later, the wire snapped off as we began to take a strain on the Whaler. Apprently original wire with a kink. POs never used it much, so with age and my usage, it finally gave [no damage or injury, thank goodness]. $500 for new wire and install. Given what could have been a very dangerous and expensive situation, the $500 was a cheap lesson.

Bill,

I am going though the same process of changing out the whaler on my 1973 53MY, and it has been a bumpy road. I am replacing the whaler with a 10" Amanzi that has a 30hp four stroke. When we first tried to lift the Amanzi, the aluminum crane bent over so much that I could not swing the Amanzi onto the aft deck of the flybridge. Then we added strength to the crane mechanism near the top area where the cable passes through which transfered the weight to the base of the crane where it comes out of the deck, which caused the 3" diamter pipe to break near the base. Our next attempt, after resodering the aluminum crane and bulking it up again resulted in another break, this time near the middle of the crane. This was the end of my crane.

Over the winter I am having St Croix Davits completely build me a new crane from scratch with a 4" diamter pipe which will also be about 4" taller as well.

I don't think your winch will have any problems unless the new tender you plan to add weights more than 1,200 pounds, but it will be your crane that you will need to deal with.

Good luck,

Marcus

my yachtfish is a 1972 model repowered with 450hp john deeres

A customer of mine had a 1985 53 ED. His davit was lag bolted to the roof - No standpipe that went thru the roof to the deck below. It gave way when lifting his RIB and the davit and RIB fell in the water. His wife nearly missed being hit. The re-mount included a pipe. Be very careful if your davit is only bolted to the roof! Most davits do have a plate with capacity listed.
