  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
52' CONVERTIBLE (1983 - 1990)
There is a new to market 1988 52C that is said to have had an Ash interior that was painted dark to match the dark laminate that was installed on the bulkheads and etc. In my opinion this effects the resale value. Any comments or opinions would be greatly appreciated?

I’d need to see photos but as always beauty is in the eye of the beholder. No one is 100% satisfied with their boats when they first buy them. Thats why they spend so much redecorating. Well at least in my case. And I’m still not done 5 years later. Good luck.

An interior that is livable, ie not schmegged, rotted or molded out, so that you can deal with it later is in MY book 10% or less of the decision process, AFTER layout, a solid hull that shows halfway decent, functionality and state of maintenance of systems including engines come waaay first. Decor is easy.

Now if it's hot pink, mirrors on the ceiling and disco balls it will sit on the market and we should definitely be able to talk.....

I personally would never consider a vintage Hatteras where someone painted over the interior wood. I don't care what the condition was of the rest of the boat.

lol Disco ball and hot pink. Love ❤️ it.

It can be removed.....

I spent a summer once removing paint off the trim in a three story turn of the century house....

Imron does not come off of thin veneer. It can be re-veneered but that will take a lifetime to fix.

Is the color offensive? If it's not offensive i don't think it would retract from the value at all. Maybe the original wood didn't look all that great and the paint/stain looks better? Got pics or link to the ad?

The great thing about paint is that you can always change the color.

Sure the wood look is nice and all, but ash isn't exactly the most decorative best looking wood around.

It’s got to affect the value. All other things being equal, it won’t be the first to sell. And one day you might want to sell it.

When I was looking for a 53 almost 20 years ago, painted wood was a deal killer. No only I don’t like the looks but who knows what s lurking under...

Stained panels can be replaced or reveneered. And I ve seen too many attempt to modernize interiors with modern materials which way too often look like cheap ikea stuff

It looks nice in the pictures. It looks like they restained the wood, not paint. I would agree that paint would hurt the value but if they just stained it a darker color, I don't think that would hurt the value.

Think they did a very good job updating the interior finishes, looks to be stained, not painted.

I'd be more concerned about what's under that shag carpeting.
