Hot alternator

I was in the engine room on a neighbors boat, that has twin Crusader power.
The engines had not been run for a week. The battery charger was humming away.
I touched one of the alternators and it was very hot. The other one was not and neither of the battery terminals.
What might cause this ? ?

bad alternator...it is shorted out internally. seen this happen many times on police cars when i worked on them. if you turn the charger off the battery will go dead fast

I will advise to pull it and send it out/replace etc.
glad to not have chase wires etc.

Also make sure the ignition switch is working correctly and shutting off power to the field.
