Holy Crap, I'm in a Hurricane!

No kidding!

Sitting offshore Miami right now on Liberty Of The Seas......

We've been in the shiz since about 4:00.... a solid hour of 50+kt winds, god knows what the sea state is like (hard to tell in a boat this big) and crap is flying ALL OVER the exposed decks (deck chairs, cushions, etc)

We're apparently holding with a Carnival ship out here waiting for first light. But - if this doesn't let up they'd have to be NUTS to run the inlet in these conditions. If you see something about her going up on the rocks, well, El Capitan got a bit ballsy at a time when he shouldn't.

I'll tell 'ya this - its pretty wild being out here in a BIG ASS ship in these conditions. No thanky in a little boat... even a big little boat..... been there done that and didn't enjoy it.

Hope those of you up and down the Florida coast are all doing ok with your boats... this "little" tropical thing has quite a punch to it. Ok, ok, its not really a hurricane... but it sure is NASTY!

You're right, Karl...we're about 35nm north of the Port of Miami, and it blew like mad last night. Woke me up a couple of times. It's the Tampa area and north that's in the direct path, but I just read that the shear is pushing the real strength to the E and NE of the storm.

I can't say we had hurricane winds here, but the rigging was sure singing. Honestly, had I have known it was going to blow like that I probably would have rigged a couple of extra spring lines, at least, but I wasn't about to trot out there and deal with it in the middle of the night with the winds and rain already up...especially when you know where the storm is centered and thinking that this was just a little microburst locally that would peter out in a few minutes.

It was blowing 40-50 kts last night for about an hour and a half. We received over 5" of rain in that time period. Yesterday when I put two extra spring lines on the boat, the neighbor looked at me like I was nuts! I'm sure the boat would have been fine without the extra lines...but I felt much better about it knowing it was secure.

I was actually up at 3:00 AM as I wanted to get my "local" signal back so I could get online without paying an arm, a leg and a nut to the ship for their "Wifi" connection.

I got more than I bargained for!

We're back home now all good - that was one heck of a blow offshore this morning though - hope nobody was dumb enough to be out in that in anything under 100' long.

Hey Karl,

If you can believe it, the annual Miami Dolphins Fishing Tournament was held on June 2, with 35 to 40 knot gusts.....yikes. We were out on Thursday with solid 4 to 6 footers but you as well as these tournament guys really got a ride for their money.

Government Cut off Miami can be treacherous especially with opposing wind and current. It sets up a really steep, fast wave pattern. Of course throw in some freighters, cruise ships....you also gotta add a clan of jetskiers to really get the flavor.

Did you see the post I put on the Sandbar RE: the 63 footer that went down off Miami ? Not pretty, but thankfully noone was injured including the Coasties that have to go out in the slop to reverse stupidity. Hope you had a nice cruise.

Yeah..... I've seen dumb crap like that - not cancelling tournaments.

Re: the powerboat, I saw coverage on CNN while on the cruise. Who knows on that one. A boat that size rarely goes down without something catastrophic happening that isn't addressed promptly. $20 says she didn't have high-water alarms in every compartment; 99 times out of 100 if you have 'em you can fix whatever is letting the water in SOMEHOW in enough time to prevent catastrophe.

Pillows, cushions, anything that you can jam in the hole will slow it down enough to allow the pumps to keep up - IF you find out before the water is over the sole!
