  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
36' CONVERTIBLE-Series I (1969 -1977)
I’m trying to find out what is a good size for the Kathy L, just the two of us and I found out last week, in the Florida Keys the no discharge zone goes from 3st mi to 12. Some number of years ago I built and stalled a 16 gal.
That was fine, but now retired I may have to re think. Jim R., You are the only one I can see that has a 36SF, what do you think?

Biggest you can fit, right? Isn't your main concern where you'll place it? Are you working with a vacuflush or gravity drain with necessary pitch type head? The dometic HTS-28 all in one holding tank is tough to beat. Id bet with a little creativity you could fit it under your forward sole. needs a flat and solid platform though.

Hatteras put the holding tank behind the water tank in front of the aft engine room bulkhead on the later 36s. Unfortunately, mine is an earlier boat, so I don't have the tank or the plumbing to show you. If you want, I can take measurements next time I'm on the boat.

Generally if they didn’t make room to install one as an option there is no room. But there is an option. Convert the fresh water tank to a holding tank and install a new fresh water tank in a different location. That way you get a decent sized holding tank and a new clean fresh water tank.

Mine is a relatively early boat, a 1971. I don't have a holding tank, I have a LEctra-San, which might not even be legal anymore. It is located on the floor of the locker between the head and the V berth stateroom. If I had to fit a holding tank, there would be room for a larger unit in there, but I'd lose some vertical space. This isn't much help, I'm afraid.

Most of these boats had fiberglass water tanks, but not all. I recall seeing some with aluminum water tanks years ago. If you decide to do a conversion as mentioned, make sure the tank is FRP and not aluminum; I don't think you can use an aluminum tank for holding waste.

Jim, Kathy L is also a1971. I put a lectrasan in the same place as you did. They are still certified by USCG but you still can’t discharge in a no discharge area. Back in 1983 when I put it in I also built a fiberglass 40x12x8 holding tank which I slid it in the forward bilge where the shower shower sump was. Then forwarded of that there is, a little, space to fit an Atwood 4141 sump that the shower and the forward AC drain into. Things are tight, but it works.
Thanks for your comments.
