  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
48' YACHT FISHERMAN (1972 - 1975)
Hi All,

Ran across this while poking around an antique store in northern Maine, thought some of you might find it interesting.

The artisan/craftsman was Leslie Edgcomb Jr. from St. Michaels MD who passed away in 2002. The Maryland Maritime Museum has several of his works, all in the same philippine mahogany case with the stainless steel backing.

The name of the yacht is the "Lord Nelson". The images don't show the detail or do the piece justice.

Is that a Huckins?

Hi All,

Still trying to figure that out Fred. I have a call into the model makers daughter to see if she has any documentation.

The Style of boat looks like a Huckins but the forward Hull section looks very Merritt like in shape. Huckins forward sections, at least on their newer boats are a bit more Boxy at bow, boxy is a bad word but I don't know how to explain it any other way, "Less Curvature" where Merritt has a little more flow to bow. I'm not saying it's a Merritt just bow looks that way.

Did Trumpy or Stevens ever build that style and if so in that era. I'm sort of stumped.

Beautiful Model though, did you buy it?

Tony

I Got It! I think it's a "Chris Craft", a 50 ft Chris Craft.

I'm going to try to research it now and see how good my luck is.

Tony

Hi All,

I did buy it Tony, on the spot and got the guy down considerably. Maryland Maritime said I got it at an unbelievable price.

That needed to be bought. Nice find.

Hi All,

Thanks Fred.

If you could see it in person it's even more beautiful. The detail extends to even window curtains.

"Lord Nelson III" was designed by Chris Nelson and built by the Annapolis Yacht Yard in 1947. This would have been just prior to that yard being acquired by John Trumpy and Sons the same year. Chris Nelson was one of the owners of the Annapolis Yacht Yard which built many of his designs. According to Lloyd's Register in 1964 she was owned by Leslie Edgecomb, Jr. Home port Marblehead, Mass. Former names were: Whiffinpoof IV, Nennah III, and Westwind III.

By 1972 - Same owner but her home port had changed to Swan Creek, Md which is near Rock Hall. Note: in 1956 her hull was lengthened by 3' 10". It would appear the she was powered by a pair of original GM 6-71's @ 165 HP. By the 1976 edition she was no longer listed in Lloyds.

So my Trumpy guess wasn't too far off.

By the way, I would have bought it also. Pretty cool.

Tony.

Hi All,

Eric,
