Help with locating drive temp sender and/or Yacht safety center problem

  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
58' LRC (1975 - 1981)
On my 58LRC, I received an alarm on the Yacht Safety Center that says "stbd drive temp", when the engine is cold and hasn't even been running. I does not go away when I start the engine. Clearly there is a problem with the alarm as the drive temperature is at ambient air temperature of about 70 degrees. (sorry for you guys up North).

Anyway, I am not sure which is the sending unit for this alarm. I'm guessing a corroded wire or loose connection on the engine.

I've attached two photos in case anyone can tell me if either of these picture shows the sender. Please don't raz me about the necessary clean-up on the engine. It's on the list.....

First one looks like a pressure sender to me......
 
2nd one looks like my digital tach sender. John
 
I would check with Sams. I had a transmission sensor on my ZF's go bad. I looked up the part number and called the manufacturer. They said they don't sell direct but they did have one approved vendor. It was Sam's Marine. $225 later I had the issue fixed.
 
Ok, so it looks like picture one is the drive pressure gauge. When I disconnect the positive wire the driver pressure gauge pegs.

There aren't any screw type terminals on the other sender. There are three pairs of crimped connections. I may have to cut the wires to see what gauges are effected, but was hoping to identify it first.

Sams sent me a picture of what they say the driver sender should look like. I can't find anything that looks similar on either transmission.
 
Just speculation, since I don't own one of these, but I would expect a temp sensor to be lower on the transmission to measure the fluid in the sump. Or, another possibility is on a filter housing.
 
I'll bet its not the sender causing this problem. Its in the board for the alarm system. To be sure, just jump the wires at the sender. Its simply a NC switch. When it opens, it alarms. So, a broken wire or loose connection will also cause an alarm.
 
Sky, that's what I was planning to do - if I can locate that sender.

Are the system boards repairable?

Yes, the boards are repairable. Follow the oil lines on the trans and you should find the sensor.

Yes, you are correct. This is the RPM pulse sensor and feeds both tachometers (pilot house and flybridge) as well as the Micro-commander engine synchronization.

As neither of these is the sender I'm looking for, I'm still looking around. I still can't seem to find that transmission temp sender, but it's obviously in there somewhere.
 
You may not have a drive temp sender.
I suspect the alarm box, probably loose switches (they look like computer chips).
If you take the alarm box cover off, inside is a board with wire/terminal strips down each side. Fuses on the bottom, inputs on the right, alarm leads to the remote panels on the left.
From the top right, the stb drive temp ICs are the 7th ones down, all across to the left.
Just use your thumb and push each in like a thumb tac, Just these.
The first chip on the right, #7 down is the fault detect, if bad or out it will false alarm. The next chip left (still #7 down) is the silence control for that fault. These two ICs are my suspect.
Don't try to pull them either, deep under the dash is not where you want to spend time trying to plug them back in.
The #7 wire down is color coded and should have a label.
Using your prints, use this label ID and trace your lead back to the clutch.

Contact C D Piner at Hatteras (with HIN) for details on any real clutch temp sender installed for your ship.
If you do not have a ships print set, he may be able to send you a page copy just for the area of interest.

Ware are you at? I have some new switches (ICs) in my hands.

Excellent info Capt. I'll call CD at Hatteras and see what info he can provide on this.

I'm in SW Florida and plan to get down to the boat today or tomorrow.

Will report my findings.
 
Cap, I don't have any IC that I can determine in my system. Attached is a photo of the board layout.

I think I may exchange the sensor wire at the circuit board with another sensor wire on the board and see if the problem moves or stays with the drive alarm. Seems like a one to one correspondence between the 12 terminals and the 12 lights/alarms on the monitor board.

That should tell me if the Yacht monitoring system is the problem or the sender, right?

My attention got diverted from figuring out this issue, but today I finally figured it out.

1st, the good news for me is that the alarm system is fine and functioning correctly.

The problem is in the wiring at the sender or should I say the wires near the sender. I found the wires were disconnected from the sender, twisted together and stuffed into a space between two hoses. I cleaned the wires and jumped them together and no more alarm. So I went to check the other (port) engine and found they too were looped together, not connected to the sender. The terminals on both senders are corroded and gone, so I will have to replace them both. I do hope they come out without breaking anything as they look to have a fair amount of green on them.

Does anyone know where to get these senders? Sams or are these readily available off the shelf?

Sams has the senders. Or they did a few years ago when I bought one.

A few years ago I did trace a ZF sender down to the MFG. There was still to many variables to take a gamble on to save any money.
Sam's had it in stock, I BOAT'd (Bent Over And Took-it) and purchased them. Other than having a rough time sitting comfortably (flat wallet) for a while, It worked perfect (the sender).
