  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
43' DOUBLE CABIN (1970 - 1984)
The Engine survey on "Slow an' Easy" went well! She topped 21Kts which we were really happy with! (2 kts headwind and slack tide)

Both heat exchangers (6-71TI's) are really bad. Does anyone know if there is an exchange program for the heat exchangers?

Also does anyone know a good Detroit guy in the Hilton Head or Savannah area? We imported the engine guy from Charleston and we are very happy.

She needs a complete service, the above and Engine zincs like yesterday!!!!

Hull, equipment survey and haul out tomorrow. We are worse than a pair of three year olds at Christmas! More to follow.

As always Thanks so much for all the help!

Russ and the Admiral

They are pulled and cleaned. If they are leaking and can't be repaired then you will need new exchangers. I assume since the boat was seatrialed that they need cleaning?

They look awful on the outside. We are almost sure the zinc will not come out without breaking. And further dis-assembly almost guarantees more bolts breaking...etc...etc.

Water temps were actually fine even at high power.

I had replace one of my HE cores after I bought my boat. The part is expensive, like around $1,000. Try to control your enthusiasm. You want the seller to believe you will walk if there's a long list. Don't underestimate the cost of bringing engine cooling system deferred maintenance up to par. I spent over $6,000. on one new HE, and new hoses and such on both engines. Parts cost and labor hours add up very quickly.

Thanks Eric,

We have the poker face on when Owner or Broker are present and Engine guy showed the Broker the issues.

We are trying to get our arms around what the worst case could be.

If you cannot get the zincs out, the end caps that they thread into are available it you want to replace them altogether. The cleaning process is ugly, but not terribly difficult.

Survey complete! lots and lots of small issues mostly from minimal maintenance not total negelect.

The problem is there is sooooo much small stuff (plus the heat exchanger issue) it adds up to almost 14K!

Depth finders inop, hailer inop,1 battery bank totally toast, windlass inop, plumbing issues both heads, gps unreadable needs O/H,
the list is very long. The surveyor made the statement she is sound but suffers from both lack of use and lack of maintenence.

I need some advice from everyone......How much should I ask for assuming I have made a very good deal to begin with. I want to be fair because I am going to be on the other side of this some day. Last one I bought was much easier because all issues were known before the survey. We will be on and off all day so thanks for your quick responses.

I can't suggest figures, but you might join Boatdiesel.com- and also start subscribing to Boats & Harbours, because a lot of what you need in the way of engine parts is going to be available from those sources. Hope the deal comes together at a decent price for all.

The market is flooded with old Hats. Why would you want one with all those issues? The prices are so cheap that it doesn't pay to get involved with a boat like that.

Impossible to say without all the details. Inoperable electronics need to be replaced and rarely are worth repairing. Unless your offer was based on a perfect boat, some of the upgrades and services are to be expected. Sounds like some of the issues could be more expensive than what you stated. You can't expect full price credit for some of this stuff because your offer wasn't based on everything being new or recently refurbished. Replacing the heat exchangers is very expensive, if that's what they need. A good cleaning isn't cheap but shouldn't be a deal breaker.

I deal with this daily. Some of the stuff may be a big deal, some of it not. When a surveyor pushes the button on something and it doesn't work, he marks it down and moves on. As an example, the windlass may need as little as a switch (or a whack with a mallet) to work, or may need total rebuilt or replacement. Electronics now days are disposable. Anything over 3 years old likely won't bring $100 bucks at a yard sale. If a recent auto-pilot doesn't work, then OK the owner should address that. Otherwise, it is what it is.

The big question is: DO YOU LIKE THIS BOAT? If you do and you want to own it, ask for some reasonable monetary adjustment and move on. If you beat the crap out of the guy on the front end of the deal, it's unlikely you will be successful in talking another huge swipe at him, unless he just wants out. Even if just on principle, most sellers have a limit.

Add up what you have spent on surveying this boat. You may find that the cost of surveying the next one (if you don't buy this one) will go a long way toward fixing the small stuff that's wrong.

This is my 2 cents worth of advice, with this caveat: This season alone I have spent on my boat what I paid for it last season. I really like my boat and with any luck, plan to own it for a long time.

Thanks to everyone so far!!!! Jim I just did join Boatdiesel.com.

Jack How did you fair the storm?

What We expected was if it is on the listing sheet as installed equipment it should work. If it croaks 10 minutes after we own it that's life as Frank would say.

Maynard, I have been looking for a year and I have looked at ALOT worse than this. All were great above deck and in bad need of help below deck. This one has "good bones" the power combination we wanted and a very good history prior to the present owner for which it has been a floating condo.

Thanks again,

Russ and the Admiral:cool:

I always expect an electronics refit to be part of acquisition since what I want is rarely going to be what someone else wanted. I also expect anything I can see and know is questionable (e.g. soft goods, etc) to be part of the deal "as-is." As for the operational condition of electronics I do expect anything listed as part of the deal to power up and nominally "function", but nothing more.

However, I expect all the machinery to work. Any machinery that is actually inoperative (or functionally so as it needs immediate replacement) is, IMHO, dollar-for-dollar deductible against my best-guess repair (or replacement, if it's trashed) cost unless it was disclosed as inop in the listing. A seller's broker who did not actually check this either with the owner or him or herself deserves what he or she gets in this regard as the listing was factually bogus if there's an undisclosed machinery problem.

Many thanks to all and you have helped us put things in perspective.

Our only issue at this point is machinery (read engine heat exchangers). We are now between 4 and 7K to either rebuild or replace them.

One of the mechanics asked the Admiral "you don't have far to go do you?" went he looked at it to quote the job during the haul out.

We offered and the owned accepted what we still think is a fair price but considerably lower than the listing price. We are both concerned that the owner will think we are just further beating them up.

You never told us what boat this is. Is it a 1962 41 ft? If so it is owned by AENEAS Charter Corporation of Carson City, NV. Doesn't sound like a floating condo if it is the one.

DC

OOPS! My bad is it a 1979 43' FBMY? Like Sky says offer an amount to fix all the repairs taken out of the price.

Go for it. Ask for a price reduction to cover the repair costs. Worst case, he will decline and then you can decide if you still want the boat at the given price. Best case, he says yes and you save a few thousand more. Its a buyers market, you won't lose the boat in either case. Demand a reduction and see what happens.

Sky,

You aren't in Isle of Hope tonight are you? We were there earlier today and noticed a boat with the same name. That is also my Admirals name!

Russ

Engine and Hull survey done!!! Oil analysis done!!! Sea trials done!!!!

All is acceptable. Just waiting on estimates for the heat exchangers.

Anybody know where a pair of Johnson and Towers heat exchangers for 6-71TI that are serviceable are????

How about a Marquipt boarding ladder?

Hopefully she will be ours next week and we will be on the way to Charleston.

A vertical 4 step Marquipt, I pd 800.00 new...4 yrs ago,

I wish I was boating. Unfortunately, my boat is tucked away in heated winter storage. No joy until next April.

Good luck with the purchase.
