Help Identifying this part

I am doing my changeover from 32v to 24v on a '53 Hatteras with 8v71ti engines.

On the alternator there are 2 wires - neg (Black) to ground on starter and pos (Red) 6AWG to positive starter post.

In the middle of the red 6AWG wire is this device which I have no idea what it is or why it is there.
Can anyone shed some light on this for me?

If I remember, you should have the Delco 30SI alternator. Pop in a 24V regulator and it should work for the next 50 years.
