  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
52' CONVERTIBLE (1983 - 1990)
I've got black smoke under load........
Between the 2 blowers there is a mechinism with a bar attacthed, on that a mechinism there is what appears to be a metal stop attacthed to a cable. If that metal stop is not holding mechinism in place could that be the cause for the black smoke???

Thanks in Advance
Tod

Take a look at the nearby thread by Boss Lady, "Turbos on 892's", and check out the turbo problem checklist....there are multiple potential causes of black smoke from turbos listed...

I think you are looking at the mouse trap door mechinism that controls the emergency air damper doors. If those are closed you couldn't even start it. Send a picture of what you are talking about. I have not worked on a 12.v71 in years so I am relying on memory. Also describe your symptoms in more detail. There are lots of things that can cause this, including the rack which controls fuel flow and the interaction with boost.

Black smoke under load = not enough air for the fuel you are injecting.

Or - bad spray pattern from one or more injectors (the fuel is not burning completely)

It can also be low compression.....

The "not enough air" is the easiest way to start - measure boost pressure both at the turbo outlet and at the airbox under load, and report back with what 'ya got.

It looks like that was it....the mouse door mechanism only shut part way so I put it back and put the lock in place and no smoke at the dock. I put it under as much load as I could with out tearing off the dock. Weird....but I now know my emergency cables do not work :(

Well I am glad it didn't cost you anything, cheapest repair I ever did, LOL. Hey, at least you found out they don't work now when you can fix them "before" you have a problem and do need them to work. We had a discussion about this safety device on another thread. I would become familiar with the process and be aware of what can happen to your blower seals if you pull the trap door when the motor is running at rpm above idle. If you don't have a CO2 fire extinguisher, I would recommend one be kept near or in the ER, it will choke off the air going to the engine. I pulled stops once on an engine on a friends boat, but it was still running, albeit at a much lower rpm, it took shooting the air intakes with an extinguisher to finally shut it down completely. I used what was handy at the time which was a Halon type, but CO2 is the preferred extinguisher for this situation. If you ever need the emergency stop you will be glad they are there! If you want to know what a Detroit sounds like that is over revving go to a tractor pull and stand next to the track. Now imagine being in the engine room with the same beast trying to blow itself up! NOT FUN, I had to throw out a perfectly good pair of underwear after that adventure. If it happens you don't have much time to react before something catastrophic occurs. I just happend to be in the galley when that one started to run away and was close to the ER, the engine didn't grenade, but most will if prompt action is not taken.

Fix those cables. Figure out why the door isn't working and take care of it.

Most engines with the trap doors have hard (not spring-loaded) racks. ONE stuck injector rack and the engine will not shut down without it.

And, if you make the mistake of taking it out of gear........
