US Customs and Border Patrol Phone Scam

I did not see this posted anywhere and wanted to inform people that some phone scammer has been calling regarding drug and contraband confiscation and to reply by pressing 1 on the phone pad. We've received three in the last couple of days. You wonder if its real especially if you are having items shipped to other parts of the world from the US, or recently checked into the US.

A quick Google search shows that the scam has been going on since December 2020.

From the CBP website:
"Residents are reporting the calls are a pre-recorded message stating, “a box of drugs and money being shipped has your (callers) name on it and it has been intercepted.” The caller is then instructed to press #1 to speak with a CBP Officer/Agent, which then attempts to get the callers banking information."

Our calls came from Minnesota, Louisiana, and Iowa. Minnesota and Louisiana left a message, Iowa did not.

The stupidity is underestimating the sophistication of some scams and one’s vulnerability.

For the past four or five years, every time a new Commodore is named we end up getting phone calls from the scammers asking for other members to go to Home Depot or other locations and get gift cards. They ask that the cards be purchased and the numbers be emailed back to the Commodore of our club. The issue is the email address is not The Commodores and they take those numbers and cash the gift cards immediately. Only one of our members fell for it for the tune of $500. Just keep a eyes open for these thieves.

[FONT=&quot]When you thank them and offer them a tip, they say "No" and instead ask you for a ride to another Home Depot.[/FONT]

likely again this upcoming weekend as soon as I can buy some more wallets.[/FONT]
