how hard is it to replumb the entire head? ripping out all the old and replacing with new stuff? would I have to remove large sections of the floor?

Sir,

I have a 1970 model 36 and just installed a holding tank. All my plumbing is very accessible and easy to work on. I have the Y valve and holding tank located in the closet adjacent to shower.

BlackPearl36C, most of the head plumbing in mine is above grade or behind a bulkhead at the worst. No floors to rip out. However, the later boats had a factory installed centerline holding tank at the aft engine room bulkhead. Again, shouldn't involve any floor ripping, but it may be a little awkward getting a waste line from the head to the engine room. Shouldn't be any worse than any other boat repair though.

admcmillan, I probably would like to do the same thing on mine. Same boat, same year. How big a tank were you able to get in there? Would you have a picture of the tank installation so I could see how it was all made to fit in that closet? It would be much appreciated.

Sounds good thanks guys! Love this place you guys have done it all. Its nice for a young(er) guy like me that loves these older boats to have a inexhaustable source of information to turn to. Its like AA for alcaholics lol.

No! No! No! No! You've got it all wrong!

AA gets people to stop drinking. We're enablers!!!

Scrod,

The dimensions were 23"L x 10"W x 8"H. These are conservative measurements. I opted to put a standard 6 gallon tank (fits with room to spare). I dont plan to use it. This all fit under original floor in the closet. You could easily raise the floor and get a much bigger tank. Also, you could have a custom tank built for more capacity. The space is not exactly square. My Y valve is located on the wall behind shower and made plumbing tank easy. I will take a picture this weekend.

Thank you Andy, that would be much appreciated.

Currently mine is all original and I would opt for an ElectraSan or similar, but there's no-discharge areas that we plan to cruise to, and I'm sure more are coming so it looks like some kind of storage is in the future. I'm still hoping to keep it simple. Hopefully your arrangement fits the bill.

Well I have to add that it all depends also on the boat! Just finished a new bowl, 35 gallon holding tank with pump out & macerator on a 1965 38' Bertram. Due to placement of thing it was a boat load more work then my similar system was. It took twice as long then mine did just due to being a different boat so hard question to answer. On the good note I did not have to cut any floor up.
