Guys,
I'm having the port engine rebuilt in frame. New pistons, sleeves, rings, head rebuild etc. I have 453 N. I'm in Marathon and the bill is going to be $3600. Is that a good price? He already has the engine torn down so it is a little late to ask. But just curious.
Thanks,

Sounds like a bargain providing he's doing a complete overhaul. I would think parts alone would be close to that.

My guy just came by and showed me the valve head and he said it has been injesting water for a long time and it looks pitted around the valve openings and where the pistons hit. Not surre if I'm explaining this right but the area where the pistons heads I think hit looks like sand paper. He said a new head is about $2000 out of Texas. Is there any other way to do this. He is taking it to the machine shop now to see if they can rework the old head. Appreciate any input.

I just got the quote to have my starboard engine rebuilt. Parts alone are $15500.00. Total bill will be $27,000. So yes you have a great deal. My engine is a 8V71 TI

Didn't we used to use the rule of thumb of $3000/hole? That would be $12000 for a 4 cyl. Something missing?

Are you doing bearings too? If that water you ingested is coolant, you may want to consider it????

53 series overhaul parts are less expensive than 71 series. The 453 is, by comparison a pretty simple straight forward rebuild. Still, that price sounds pretty cheap.

No turbo, inter or aftercoolers. If the head is good it should be a pretty inexpensive install. Injectors, kits and bearings are pretty inexpensive.

12 years ago that same head (OEM) was $1800 for me. I think it was a reman also. Maybe I paid too much but everything runs well.

Guys,
My head was not rebuildable. Found one on ebay, new in the box and loaded for $1220. My mechanic said if I did not buy it he would just to put on his shelf. Should be here on Monday.
Thanks,
