Hatteras Model
43' DOUBLE CABIN (1970 - 1984)
I need some ideals on how to to convence the wife on purchasing a hatteras instead of a 39 Silverton MY

Come and sit on my 39 Hatt for 1 hour on the weekend. I am surrounded by 39 silvertons and carvers, motor yachts, sport bridges etc. Count the number of compliments we get from passers by. The we'll go for a ride and kick their arses all over.

Forget the dock. take her out in a bit of a sea and have her go back on the silverton.

My little (4' 11 3/4") wife can run our 43' MY in 3-5' seas, due to the stability and ease of handling. Have your call my wife, who will 'splain things to her.

Ask me about a friend who parted with a 43' MY for a "pretty" (it looks nice) aka new Carver, which "blows around in the wind" and he wants to sell after only two years.

Also as you sit there nice and steady on a Hatt watch the other's rock and blow around and that is when they are tied up!!!!!

1. Try and setup rides on both in truly crappy conditions.

2. Show her both a 20 year old Hatt and a 10 year old Silverton .

3. Show her the re-sale value of any Silverton vs. that of a Hatt.

4. Tell her that no one will ever ask you why you bought a Hatt and people will constantly ask you why you bought a Silverton.

scratch the resale value, crap for all boats now. if you are in the market to buy you are in the drivers seat.

As others have mentioned, they are sort of unique, not a dime a dozen boat. Ours is in sea ray hell, Merritt Island FL between the 2 SeaRay Factories, I have never herd anyone saying "nice SeaRay" However Our old 34c has a large fan base at our marina, everyone stops to ask. Because we dont have hatteras logos on the boat most people ask what kind of boat it is and are shocked when we tell them 1967 Hatteras.

Tell your wife this story: last year in Kentucky I was docked beside a reasonably new(2003) 61 Viking Sport Cruiser. After the courteous 'nice boat you have' exchanges I was invited to tour the neighbors Viking - nice day boat I guess? Then I offered a tour of my boat - quite dirty from the northern transit. The neighbor's wife walked through the galley into the salon and said, "this is more what I had in mind, what a huge difference in space, this is like a condo". My boat was 20 years older and I hadn't really gotten her cleaned up yet. The neighbor was sick, you could see it in her face, she told me her dishwasher was in the ER and she guessed she'd never use it 'cause she wasn't going to cart all of the dirty dishes into a basket and carry them down a hatch and then 3 steps to the ER! She had a 2 burner range and a small countertop. After spending $800k+ I think she could have cried.

Try this. A few years back when I was selling and brokering boats in SC I had the misfortune of assisting a “licensed captain” (a guy whom I later suspected of being a fraud) in delivering a new Silverton to North Myrtle Beach, SC. The guy (“captain”) ran us right into a moderate to heavy storm (50MPH winds, 80 MPH gusts) on the Pamlico
Sound in eastern NC.

Only afer we reached our destination in SC did we discover that, a) the batteries had broken loose from their tie downs and, b) the forward deck had begun to separate from the hull!!

Basically it’s like this, if all you intend to do is to cruise some fair weather inland lake somewhere but use the boat more as a “condominium”, then jump on it. BUT I CAUTION YOU, if you really plan to do some serious boating, then don’t take the word of respondants on this forum, ask MARINE SURVEYORS which boats hold up!

BTW, I love my wife. We own a Hatteras.

Lets also do a comparison...

Silverton= Pinto

Hatteras= Peterbuilt Semi

Which one would you want to trust your family and loved ones to ride on.

I have delivered several Silvertons and Carvers. They do nice speed but the creaking when you hit a wake or wave not to mention how they "shudder"...

Also on one Silverton I had the fuel filter for the port engine fall off it's mount due to improper installation (causing the motor to stop) the microwave fell out of it's mount, sliding door came off it's slide and TV crashed off it's stand.

All the while we were only in 2' seas and the owner was driving the boat....

Do you all need to go for another ride my 43 DC ? I gaurantee that on a day with any type of sea you will like my 43 Hatts' ride with the stabalizers on , better than the Carver.

I'm sorry, you said Silverton//Same difference.

Definitions:

Yacht: exceptionally well built and engineered vessel designed with excellent sea keeping abilities. Examples: Hatteras, Burger, and Bertram.

Boat: what people who cannot afford a yacht buy. I am not kidding.

Dreamweaver66,

Because you are smarter than that. You're on this site which is a step in the right direction. Correct?

Puleez, tell me in all seriousness that you not really in a 2' sea to cause all that...or were you doing 30knots?

Forget the dock. take her out in a bit of a sea and have her go back on the silverton.

That's maybe the best single thing to do

39 Silverton Displacement: 24,000LBS
38 Hatteras DC Displacement: 34,000LBS

The Silverton will bob like a cork, and you can forget running into any kind of weather.

You have to experience the difference. Once you have been on a "real" boat, the others are just water toys.

Do yourself and your family a favor and go for ride on both boats when there is some nice chop on the water, then make your decision.

The other issue is quality of materials. Hatteras sets the standard on this issue. Do not get enamoured with shiny and modern looking. There is a lot more to a boat than what you look at everyday. Think ahead about things like maintenance. You are not buying a car or a house. Wrong choices have consequences.

I did sea trail a 43 Hatt. My wife hated the boat. Maybe it was just the boat. It was powered with naturals. The exhaust was terrible meaning it would ecco in your ears. it is listed on Yachtworld a 77 43 flushdeck. In Maryland. I can't get her to spend a 100k on a boat that is over 20 years old. We did sea trial a 71 43 with ti and it was a very nice boat. i think it was named Finalee. Very nice boat. She just doen't want to spend 100 k on a old boat.

Who was it, the Midas Man I think that said " You can pay me now or Pay me later".

There are some phenomal deals to be had right now on many nice Hatteras'.

Just spent the day on a 45' Hatteras talking with a mechanic about the various other boats he's currently working. These conversations could change you mind on buying an old Hatteras verses a new anything else.

Hey, you are the one who has to see the value in buying a properly constructed boat. Also, if you make the mistake of promoting your wife to Admiral, you will regret that decision, since the "Admiral" will then feel like criticising the "Captain's" decisions.

Look at it like this, would you rather drive an old Cadillac or a new Hyundai? Maybe you should look at trading the admiral in for a newer version with less mileage.LOL, she won't like that argument, but we are talking about the same things. I would take the old Hat over the new boat.

Just be at the dock when a nice classic pulls in and everyone comes over to look at it and hear the comments. Nobody and I mean nobody, even gives a second look at a carver, silverton, stink ray, or any of the other boats.

P.S. $100K is a down payment on a center console boat nowadays. A new fountain 38 CC is almost $300K.
