Hatteras Model
41' CONVERTBLE-Series I (1964 - 1971)
hi all,
i refinish the dash on my 68 41 conv. and am looking for a replacement wheel the problem is that the helm is a 1" straight shaft, and every wheel i look at is a 3/4" taper. any suggestions
thanks mark

try edson, i beleive they still offer straight shaft wheels. they are mostly a sailboat supplier. should have a online catalog

Mark,
I have a complete Helm that I purchased from this forum a year or so ago. I am pretty sure it has the wheel you need. I will check the measurements and email pics if you like. Send an email to wndsr366@aol.com so i have your email if interested.
Ben

I have a 22" SST with 1" straight bore. If you need it make me an offer. It has been stored for a while but should clean up nicely.

ok i appriciate the offers but this is the bridge wheel and as you know the orignal bridge console is small. the biggest wheel i can use is about 15 1/2" in diameter, and it seems the 1" straight shaft is primarly used on sailboats which uses a much bigger steering wheel.
anybody have a good recomendation for rechroming the original wheel
thanks mark

Mark-I also have the original upper helm wheel. I will look at it as well-I am pretty sure it too is very nice.

Mark-The other Hatteras wheel I have is chrome with 5 wooden handles (I am sure there is a correct nautical term for them). The wheel is a 1" shaft, 12" circumference and then add another 5" for the handles. Again, if you are curious, send me your email and I will send pics.
Ben

Mark how about just machining it out to 1".

If you need help with that I am sure I can do it for you.

Dan

ben,
thanks for the offer but i am looking for a different wheel style

dan,
i bought a cast stainless wheel and mounted it on the bridgport but my tool bits and end mills would not touch it

i sent the original wheel to browns plating service, we'll see how it turns out
thanks mark

You need carbide to machine stainless. You can buy carbide tipped drills a lot cheaper than solid and it should do the job. A boring head with a relatively cheap brazed carbide boring bar is an option too and would be more accurate.

Check Sam's Marine we have 15" wheeels in stock with 1" bore.

I have two that I am not using. If you need one, let me know, i think one is 17" or 18". I can verify if you want it.
