  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
48' COCKPIT MY-Series II (1993 - 1996)
Curious, I’ve heard Brunswick owned, for a period of time, Hatteras back in the day. Does anyone know what years?

Have you read this yet? Interesting write up on the first 50 years of Hatteras.

No but I am now

Heck of a story. It was AMF that owned it. I was curious about the hull quality. I heard that Hatteras had a -eriod of years that didn’t live up to its reputation. Perhaps that is wrong information

I discovered all kinds of interesting information on the Sam's website as I was rebuilding it, most of it I didn't even know was there because I was so focused on the forums when visiting previously. 🔎

Willis Slane started Hatteras in 1959. North American Rockwell owned Hatteras from 1968 thru 1972. .AMF owned Hatteras when I went to work there in 1974 in High Point, NC. Shortly after Hatteras' 25-year anniversary in 1985, Irwin Jacobs and Minneapolis' Minstar completed a hostile takeover of AMF and sold off all its subsidiaries, except Hatteras, and spun off Genmar Industries as its boating arm.

In 1997, following a decline due to the 10% luxury tax, the High Point manufacturing plant was closed and operations were consolidated at the New Bern, NC facility near the coast.
Steve McPherson and I chose not to move to New Bern and partnered with Hatteras to start Sam's Marine in June 1998. SAM was Steven Allen McPherson's initials and located in Ramseur NC near High Point. Steve left Hatteras shortly after and I left the company as an employee in 1999.

Sam's started its Fort Lauderdale location in 1999 after Hatteras discontinued the Allied Marine Group dealership in Lauderdale.

Brunswick Corporation purchased Hatteras in 2001 and Cabo Yachts in 2006. Brunswick sold both brands to private equity firm Versa Capital in 2013.
Versa sold the companies to Bass Pro's White Water Marine Group in 2021.

That’s what I was looking for! Thank you. Do you know of any of those years that Hatteras hulls did not live up to their reputation of being floating tanks?

Only the 41 convertibles which I think were built in the late 80s or early 90s, perhaps? Some of the early hulls were cored below the waterline and they didn't hold up very well. I think Hatteras might have taken some boats back.

I think they bought them all back

I’ve ridden Harley Davidson bikes for many years. I love the bikes and I love the history of HD. I own several of them. I bought my !994 Hatteras 5 years ago and equally fell in love with Hatteras. Hearing the history of the Hatteras company makes me respect the brand and the quality. Thanks for sharing.
