  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
53' MOTOR YACHT (1969 - 1988)
Several Hatteras owners and myself have noticed how many Hatteras owners use the forums and are not members of the 1510 club. I would like to remind you folks what a great club the 1510 club is. I have been a member of the club for about three years now and have found the members to be the best bunch you could hope to find. There is a great newsletter that is always full of interesting articles as well as regular rendezvous where there is always a great turn out of members vessels. I don't want to over step the boundaries of this site by appearing to solicite members for the club. The club is a non profit group and I thought it important to remind anyone I could to consider joining. I don't profit from this post at all. Feel free to log onto www.1510club.com and check it out. There is a downloadable member application there as well. For all of you "hard to shop for" individuals out there. Why not mention a membership for Christmas?
Thanks for your consideration.

It always appeared to me that the 1510 Club was pretty much an East Coast group. Most of the members are in the Maryland, New Jersey, New York area people and the rendesvous is usually in that area as well. If you ever get a Great Lakes branch going, though, I might be interested.

Funny you should mention that..
we have been working hard to put aside that image...
it is just not true..
this coming yr ...july 2006 there will be a GREAT LAKES REND....our 1st
details on the 1510 site
many of us reside in the great lakes area even though my boat is in fla
don cameron is our cruisemaster for the great lakes rend ..
we would like to have someone offer to have one in the chicago area..
more and ,more activities for those who chose to participate..you only get fun out of our club if participate.
we are trying to make that easier and fun for captains and their ADMIRALS...
ALSO...winter rend in fla ...mar 16-23rd west coast of fla ..more details later
you can come by car or plane and still have fun..

thanks and would like to know what you would like us to offer to get you to join and participate

well, i almost hate to say this but in all honnesty i haven't found the club very useful. I joined last year, got a couple of newsletters, the club online forum has 0 traffic (and annyoing popups...)...

i guess it's nice for those in the north east where most of the members seem to be, I know that bill is trying hard to get things going in the SE... but my shcedule has prevented me from attending the SE RVs so far.

I've gotten far more "bang for the buck" right here...

It's hard to figure where the $100 a year go... sorry if i sound cheap ! :-)

I applaud Pascal for stating what I was reluctant to say but since he did...

I agree. I thought about it when we first bought the boat. In my enthusiasm for things Hatt, I bought two Hatt sweatshirts and two Hatt jackets so I thought about the 1510 club. But I couldn't see any benefit to joining. We are not "club member" kinds of people anyway. I don't say that as a criticism of clubs, we are just anti-social! :)

Therefore since that club atmosphere was the primary "benefit", it didn't seem useful to me. Then again, how could anyone else possibly compete with this site! As I (and many others) said when this site was migrating over to its current iteration, I'd have no problem at all paying a subscription fee for this board.

I guess it depends on whether you like "get-togethers'....I do. I'm going to put a plug in here for our own (nonprofit!) yacht club, the Classic Yacht Club of America. We are based in the central Chesapeake Bay area, we enthusiastically welcome classic yachts, Hatteras or not, of whatever construction material. I think we have four vintage Hatts including mine, and one of the two top boats in our yearly member's judging (a voluntary activity) was an excellently kept 53MY named Top Hatt. Email me or Seaeric (also a member of this forum) if you're interested. Yes, I know this is not exactly on topic. Sorry about that.

Until my 43' grows up, I'm not able to join the 510 club...... sigh

some interesting points from you guys......
the problem is ...you wouldn't get anything out of this forum if you didn't
PARTICIPATE...
THE NATIONAL REND IS IN THE CHESAPEAK AREA ...BECAUSE THAT IS WHERE THE CLUB WAS FOUNDED ....GO FIGURE
anyway ...you miss the point by not joining and then going to a rend ..
the mnational rend 's have many discussion group meetings and invited trade speakers and venders ..more one on one time ..many things for the wives tooo..
I started the fla rend with a different idea and format in mind...CRUISING ...
and time to talk with all the captains, hor douvre parties and more cruising..and boat open house to show off your stuff
you always have more fun when you are on the boat.
we will continue cruising again this yr in mar on the west coast of fla
GREAT LAKES REND ..juy 2006..again cruising in mind for those that use their boats
we are trying to be user friendly....we now have an associate membership for those who dont have a 1510 boat ...you can join if just have the interest in hatteras's...or have one of a different size...also a corporate membership for those who have business related interest..
I do appreciate the comments.and suggestions..keep them coming
another point to consider...if you look at how many people look and read these threads...and then compare to how many write comments on the forum
you will find that only the 10-20% do the talking and the others enjoy the info
BRREAK OUT... and enjoy...participate...and enjoy ..join us ...and you will enjoy what we have to offer

Double Eagle, Well said. Most of the 1510 guys that I'm aware of here on the Chesapeake, don't really cruise anywhere in their boats. They mainly sit on their boat at the dock and talk about it all. Yachting is a different experience if you get of the bench and into the game.

seaeric
thank you for pointing out the DOCK QUEENS- OR - KINGS
many of the people that get a hatteras are so excited etc etc etc .
they start to think they have to restore thier hatt to perfect condition
and never leave the dock because this or that is not completed.
We hav e always encouraged our members to attend even though they are a boat in progress..
we have all been there...
my blood pressure goes down when the sun is shining and the breeze is flowing thru the bridge ....the sound of the detroits humming along at 1200 rpm...being in fla helps in jan thru may also..
what a way to winterize the boat....never had a freeze up yet...opps just the ice maker..
more later...

Bill,
Glad to hear what you said - just want to clarify. My Hatt is of the 1802 (not 1510) variety, are you suggesting I cpould join anyway? I also don't know of a 1510 Great Lakes Chapter, is there one? I like to cruise our boat and don't mind swinging a few wrenches (albeit with bruises and forehead slapping). We do have a few 'participants' to this website here in the Lakes - might we have a chance to 'join-up and bend an elbow or two'? Nothing better than chatting and learning from fellow Hatt owners, this forum is extremely valuable to me. Also, I don't know about the July06 Rend -dare I ask about it and to whom might I ask?

still serving, Bear'

bear,
Thanks for the reply...
Associate membership....is for anyone who has interest in the 1510 club and may not have the boat yet, or former hattereas owners who have sold their boat but still want to stay in touch..

Stay tuned here we will post the info about the july 2006 rend
we would like to have an informal chapter here, but need to find out how many 1510 owners that are out there ...

To start with I don't like politics. I like this great group of guys here. They will help anyone. They don't care what size of boat you have. Just a need for help. I boat the Great Lakes. Erie mostly in my 43. I'm retired and I live on my boat for 5 months of the year and I don't live at the dock. This group had a great meeting last year. We are all new here and I'm sure there will be more get togethers in the furture. I agree with Pascal, Sky Cheney and Jaxfishgyd. Whats in it for me? An associate membership. Pay the same bucks and I'm a second rate member. What do I need a news letter from the Chesapeak area for. When I have a group of guys from everywere in the world like this. This is THE BEST FORUM going. No one is rich or poor here. We don't care what size boat you have. Just a need to learn to repair and enjoy our boats. There is more knowledge and info right here than any news letter and its free to everyone. Thanks to our great host and its members. Just my thoughts. BILL

TROJAN....
DONT SHOOT THE MESSENGER....

what politics would you be talking about ??? did I suggest politics?
I havent met a hatteras owner that wasnt a great person...get more than a couple together and you have a great time... you imply that only this forum will help anyone ...wrong...If you have a hatteras most people dont care what size it is......its a hatteras..a classic...
glad you are retired...i also spent 5-6 months with my boat
you mentioned this group had a meeting last yr ..could you tell me more about it? hope I can join you guys this yr..
what is in it for you ???? I guess only what you make of it..
do you look at the glass as 1/2 full or 1/2 empty.....if you feel second rate ...that comes from you...not our club..
Our newsletter trys to cover all the area of the US ...and we will accept articles from anyone on a hatteras subject...
several have mentioned the money...yea it is important to all of us..some have more than others ...so what ...its the fun you have with what you have..you stress over a $ 100 bucks ...well what about the fuel prices...will that keep you at the dock??.,...I think not....some things in boating are just not free....GO FIGURE...
If you guys dont want to join up OK...just dont beat us up and belittle what we are trying to do...
sometimes...things that cost NOTHING...are WORTH exactly that...
but as you said not this forum..

my 3 cents worth

I don't want to dwell on a subject that is not directly related to the betterment of our boats and friendship. I also don't want to kill the messenger. Soliciting for members is politicing. But just as your organizations name implies it discriminates against the smaller boats. Let alone what the associate membership implies. Just because a lot of us have smaller boats does not make us any less important. On this forum everyone is equal. Granted some of our members are a lot more technical than others. But everyone has something to contribute. That is part of what makes this forum so great. Over and over again members thank each other for the help they receive from the vast amount of knowledge that is affordable from this group. I know I have. I'm not sure that us shorties would be recieved the same reception in your group. Obviously you don't feel this way or you would not be here. Just the same. I think I will stay in my own pond. The others are more than capable of making their own decisions. Enough Said. BIll

My understanding as a mod here is that this forum is for ALL Hatteras owners - and those who admire Hatteras boats.

Note I said BOAT - not "yacht." My personal view - and this has nothing to do with Sam's or anyone else - is that there are two kinds of "boat" - a surface vessel under 100' LOA and a SUBMARINE - anything larger than 100' I call a SHIP. Others will tell you that if you own it personally, its a BOAT; if its a commercial enterprise AND over 100' long, its a ship.

From my point of view there is no such thing as a "yacht", as it is an entirely artificial contrivence intended to further snobbery, of which I want no part.

Others will differ with my view of course - or to put it in nautical terms,
whatever floats your boat.....

As for other clubs, such as the subject of this post, I don't have any argument with members pointing out smaller, less-convivial groups that happen to include (or are even exclusive to) Hatteras boats. They certainly seem on-topic to me - again - personal opinion.

However, to the extent that those discussions degrade into personal invective, that's pretty clearly inappropriate. Let's try to keep things "nice" around here - its part of what makes this forum so great. I've had to do precious little "moderating" here since this forum was turned on - nearly all of it aimed at people trying to exploit this forum for commercial purposes (e.g. commerical brokers rep'ing boats and posting their wares here) - that's clearly forbidden by the rules, and required no judgement call. I really hope we can keep it that way around here - I like this group a LOT and spend a good part of my online time reading and posting here....

And many thanks from a Hatteras newbie for doing so....invaluable information, that sadly is still sometimes over my head, but I'm trying!!

"...you can join if just have the interest in hatteras's...or have one of a different size..."

Now this opens up a whole new area for me.....

We had two 53's dock here 2 years ago on their way South and when I asked them about the club, I was told, "Its called the 1510 Club FOR A REASON".

My poor 43' has had a complex ever since they said that.... And why I haven't even considered looking into joining.....

Guess it's time to rethink things

Many years ago when I was in the USN, it was pretty much understood that a vessel that can "normally" be carried aboard another vessel was to be called a boat. Naturally there are always exceptions such as when the USS Cole was put aboard another craft to take it to a repair facility - hardly what would be considered normally.

Regarding the term "YACHT" - if the vessel (power or sail or otherwise) is used strickly as a pleasure craft it is a yacht. Therefore someone's 19' center console is his Yacht if it is used for pleasure only. If it is used as a work boat for fishing, claming or whatever, it is a boat.

Interestingly the term "Mega" Yacht seems somewhat pretentious. The term Yacht is not IMHO pretentious. (Especially if it's a Hatteras)
