  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
45' CONVERTIBLE-Series II (1984 - 1992)
Has anyone seen the Line Drawings, Layout, Projected Performance Spec etc. on the New GT 70. I'm just curious if anyone has heard of any new updates on when it will be Started/Finished etc. I think it will be an exciting boat for Hatteras and just looking for updates. I figured with the Palm beach show there may have been some additional info relased.

This is the first I've heard of it. Couldn't find any info online either. Any links you know of? Is this a new hull or a tweaked 70C?

I spent quite a bit a time at the Hatteras dock at the Miami show, I recall a GT63 was the biggest there and none of the sales staff mention any bigger GT, I guess it could be just on the drawing board for now. Not that I would be able to afford one until its 20yrs old anyway!

It was released at a Dealer meeting during Miami show that details on an all New GT70 will be released soon. They did have a drawing of it but details were very limited. Just wondering if anyone else had any updated information.

That would be interesting especially since they don't have a 70C in the current line. It would be great to see Hatteras build up their model line. I heard Viking sold 6 boats at the Miami show. All big boats from 60ft-76ft. Viking now has 13 convertibles and 3 express SF in their line. Hatteras has 4 convertibles. Amazing how Viking has pulled so far ahead in the convertible market. Their new boats are fresh and have some pretty impressive specs. Not sure how Hatteras can regain this market until they rebuild buyer's confidence in the brand. It's a real shame because Viking has managed to grab so much of Hatteras' market even when Hatteras was building much better boats.

It is amazing whats happened over the last 20 years. I believe, and this is only my opinion on what hurt Hatteras. When they were bought out and Corp. decisions and the bottom line effected the development of new product buyers started looking to Viking. Unlike Viking and the Healey brothers i.e. "boat builders" Hatteras hasnt been run from the TOP by "boat builders" for a long time. And anytime you have NON BOATERS, ACCOUNTANTS, and CEO's making decisions that effect what the Builder, Designers, Workers, Captains, Owners really want the product will suffer. We all understand it's a business and it has to be profitable but I think they tried to Rely on the NAME, HISTORY, and Reputation for to long. I also believe they hurt customer base by eliminating entry level boats. Not everyone needs, wants or can afford a new 54 ft $2,000,000+ boat. Buyers like to buy a certain brand and move up over time as needed and keep familiarity with their Brand, Dealer, Service Provider, Systems, Associated Groups, etc. "THE BOATING FAMILY" Now I know Cabo was bought for that purpose but its just not the same. They are different, systems, panels etc, are different. Plus Hatteras had a following from a family tradition standpoint, Grandad owned one, My Father owned one, now I want to own one but I cant because 54 is way to big and expensive for my young family so I guess I'm buying the only other quality brand I can grow with, and I'm going to Purchase a New 42,or 46 Viking. I KNOW this is happening and could name a few people from personal expierience. I feel Hatteras needs to get back it's roots and what made all the 70's 80's and 90's boats great sea going little tanks. There is a reason there are so many used as charter boats to this day, because they help up over time and are still solid and safe boats. They need to put the decisions along with the day operations back into the hands of a true builder that has the same LOVE for boats as the person buying it. That along with expanding the line can make the company great again and reestablish itself as the premier builder it once was. I've seen a glimmer from time to time but there is still along way to go.

I agree. Viking continually updates their line and actively looks to what their customers want next. They actually listen to what their customers want. The new 92C was built because their 82C owner's were looking for the next step up for them. Hatteras hasn't done this in a long time. They've been too busy changing management and not focusing on the boats themselves. Brunswick has been too busy trying to make Hatteras the next step for their Sea Ray owners and that didn't work out for anyone. They also waited far too long to up update the Hatteras convertible line and lost their customer base along the way. The new retooled GT line is great but the damage is done. The confidence in the brand is gone and until something drastic changes, it's not going to get better any time soon. The big boat market is bad for just about every builder. Some are just doing a better job of retaining as much of it as they can.

There are alot of people that feel the same way we do. Maybe they should hire one of us? LOL. I think the main issue is not the employees at the factory. Most of those people love Hatteras Yachts and want to make a great product but I feel they knd of had their hands tied and were doing the best they could whille under the constarints of Brunswick. Hopefully they get a new owner with as much passion for the boats as the people willing to buy them and we see things turn around. As far as the product line goes I really do feel they need a few smaller vessels at a miniumum in the 40 to 50 ft range but also I would Love to see a Faster, Shallower, Scaled down version of the 82,86, and 90 Conv. This new GT 70 could be a great start. A Layout similar to the last 70C w/4 Staterooms, a full Aft Deck w/ seperate Crew and tackle room under the aft deck and accessed from the cockpit. That way crew can come and go as they please without disturbing owners/guests. These new Mezza seating boats are nice for guests but I feel Sucks for crew with no rigging station or tackle centers. Plus everytime you need something you have to ask people to lift their feet or stand up. The last 70C with crew under the aft deck and tackle centers would be ideal. Again just my opinion.

Spot on. I knew that once Brunswick brought the Sea Ray mentality to Hatteras it was only a matter of time. Brunswick also shit on a bunch of long time dealers who were loyal and helped make Hatteras a household name.

I agree, we have been back an forth on this a few times here. I think that aside from the various individual mistakes i.e.. dealers, slow updates to existing models etc. what they need is a definitively new line. The GT's, as good as they are, and I believe they are great boats, are just not innovative enough.

If they don't make a quantum leap forward in their next retooling then I continue to fear for the brand. Mind you I have no idea what that leap is, sort of like the old politicians definition of pornography, "I cant define it but I know it when I see it." Same goes for boats, we may not be able to define what is coming next but I know that the new 100 ft MY on their website aint it.

With the company up for sale, I can't see how any new products will help.

Is anyone aware of this and what ever happened to the building of it. As stated above I heard about the possible release on information of a 70 GT but while looking for additional info I stumbled across this on www.superyachttimes.com The line drawings look great with very similar lines to the New Viking 92Conv. currently in production.
