hi to everyone, I am about to buy an hatteras 50 from 1981 re-engined with 2018 volvo penta D11670 600 hp each.In a couple of days I have to decide whether to buy or not, and my doubt is whether it is under-engined because originally it had two gm engine with a higher number of horsepower. If since volvo penta are modern and perhaps more performing engines there is no problem and I can proceed with the purchase? I am not interested in the maximum speed, in fact I believe that my normal cruising speed will not exceed 950 rpm (I like to enjoy sailing and I also like to save fuel given the cost of fuel in the Mediterranean). I thank everyone in advance for the help that I am sure you will give me. best regards

I’ve seen some HP ratings on newer engines that didn’t equal what the older engines were. Best thing is to take it out and run it . Should hit 20-21 knts at 90% power. That’s what the 650 hp 8/92’s did. Even though you say you will run hull speed these boats preform best on the plane.

This is true. On freshly resurfaced and installed exhaust manifolds when forced to run slow for hours limping I had spooge here and there on the manifolds and a mysterious coolant dump under one engine. When up and running I closely monitored. No more spooge or coolant loss, not even a drop after 850 miles, mostly on plane. Now we are only ever at hull speed due to restrictions or just a lazy day. Otherwise 1800-1900.

Re: hatteras 50 dal 1981

so you tell me that the engine could be fine but the problem would be the prolonged slow pace? I spoke to owners who tell me to always sail at slow paces without any problem, just put the engines at a number of revolutions for which the turbines are already activated.

2-cycle Detroits would "slobber" when run at slow RPM for prolonged periods. The Volvos won't have that problem. I am assuming they are turbos, so you might get some carbon buildup on the turbine.

Were the transmissions and/or props also changed with the engines?

exactly, they tell me that to go slow, you have to go at a number of revs such that the turbos are started, unfortunately I can't talk to the old owner because he is no longer with us and his sons are selling the boat. I don't know if they also changed the shafts and propellers, but I know that the owner was a wealthy person who spent on everything without even asking the price.
