Hatteras Model
Not Currently A Hatteras Owner
I've been thinking about moving up, and with the market the way it is, now (or soon) may be the time (although I'd also be a seller--my problem). I've always liked the older 36 Hatts. What I'd be looking for is a recently repowered 36 in nice shape. There are a few out there, and I'd like to know when I start looking what the Hatt 36 "trouble spots" are. Any advice appreciated.

John, there are two of these for sale on the forum. Both are recently repowered boats, in good shape, with which I am familiar. PM me for details. Include a phone number if you want to talk about them.

John: The 36' is an excellent old Hatteras, I have had my 1970 for 24 years (purchased it from original owner). About the only thing left from 1970 is the hull. The last item to go was the refrigerator. These are great boats to update with modern engines etc. You will find a lot of projects in the owners galleries. When purchasing look carefully around the widows for leak damage and the rear salon bulkhead was a problem on some boats due to water intrusion around the door frame. The V Bunk port lights will also leak over time if not reseated with fresh caulk. Happy boat hunting, as Jim said there are a couple listed on this site and I believe there are two or three on Yachtworld.com. Bob

I got mine in CT, just redone one of the motors and the other has 800hr. boat is in good shape and have done all the maintance in and out. I just dropped the price, I know Banchee also has his for sale nice boat as well.

I've had my 76 for 11 years now.....only problem I had was soft spots on the bridge floor from water intrusion around screws holding it on.

But I love the boat...the lines, the ride, the looks...it's a classic! If I could change one thing.....I'd opt for a Slane bridge....the original bridge is a bit small.

Good luck with your search.......

My boat is for sale on the site, Banshee. My family has owned the boat since 1972, and she is a 1970 model. You my friend are making a wise decision, even though I have poured what some would consider a ridiculus amount of money in to a very old boat, 37 years old, she looks better than alot of the new ones, with the 330b Cummins, she is fast and fuel efficient. Dr. jim will find this out soon. The only thing my boat will need in the next five years is a paint job. But if you can get a low hour, remodeled, updated, sexy 36 foot convertible, for under 100k. I would jump on it.
I will be in Ocean City saturday 2/10/07, if you would like to veiw my boat, I am showing it a noon, and I should be availible at 2:00 if you are interested.
Plus there are two other 36 on the site that have been shown as much love as mine, but they are all set up little different , from stock to highly customized.
Good luck in your search.
JW

We have had our 77 36C for about 15 years, and love the boat. Like several on this forum we re-powered with B series Cummins, which yields a nice 24 -25 KNT cruise and good fuel economy (ours cruises at about 1 mile per gal., and around 2 miles per gal. at 8 KNTS). Very stout boat with good ride for a boat that size. We also can get into some smaller creeks/marinas/slips with the beam/draft. No issues except window/port leaks, which can be fixed. We also had some bonding issues from PO which caused replacement of rudder post housings. Hull is rock solid - no blister issues (old FG formula and solid hand lay up). We have chosen to restore most of the OEM equipment (which is good quality) and keep the look and feel as close to vintage as we can. Stuff we have replaced/upgraded include engines, gen set nav/com/radar/instruments, refrigerator, and carpet, drapes, furniture, canvas, etc. Paint is original and still looks good after some minor touch ups. Long cruises (weeks/months) are pretty much limited to 2 people, but wife and I + cat have no problems with multi-month trips. Our galley down works well, full sized fridge and shower are nice, but counter space is tight, and we eat many dinners aboard on folding card table outside in cockpit or in salon if weather is bad. We have to work to keep from loading so much stuff/weight on long trips that will cost a KNT or two at cruise, but the repower took 2-3K lbs out of the boat and weight is not really that big an issue. Up here in MD a bridge enclosure lets us use her just about year round (except when iced in like today - 9 degrees this AM). Boat fishes well - big cockpit for a 36 and functional fish door. Yes the bridge is a little small, but OK for 2 people (4 to 5 on short trips). The boat is a classic, and still turns heads. People can't believe it's 30 years old. Find a good one and enjoy! :)

Thanks for all the information. Maybe....
