  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
53' MOTOR YACHT (1969 - 1988)
I have some airline cracks mostly under the deck, so on the ceiling of my adft deck.

I thought it was probably due to the PO Boston whaler the had banged around. Also notice a few outside the side sliding doors.

So the issue is what to do about them?

Grind them out and fix. Sand and paint over or do nothing, or some other suggestions?

Anyone else have these and done something about them?

As long as it’s superficial, I generally sand and skim with barrier coat primer before paint. Any bigger and I use MarineTex.

I've had some luck with allowing some super glue to seep into the cracks - the stuff is super 'wet' - and then sanding and painting. Obviously it depends on how big the crack is. Good luck

thanks

Just seem to be hairline cracks.

I will try a primer before painting

I have owned several Hatteras's from 1977-1998. They all have had hairline cracks usually in corners or where the bulkhead meets the deck. The only fix for the long term is to cut out the crack until you get to solid substrate. Otherwise, any other fix will eventually see the crack reappear. Filling in the cut out area is easy, but everyone has their own opinion on the best material to use. I've seen a painter use fiberglass and resin in a paste form fill in the crack, fare it, prime and paint for a permanent repair. Unfortunately, another crack will probably soon form somewhere on the boat. As long as they are superficial, there is no concern. A crack as wide as the thickness of a business card should be cut out.
