  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
52' CONVERTIBLE (1983 - 1990)
I have 3 separate compartments under the engines. The port side dry starboard the middle one gets salt water and will not leave. Question! Are the three tied together in some secret way, Can I tye them together? Should I leave it alone are they intended to be independent foe engine oil snd Dutch.

Tim ---- On mine the middle compartment (port & star) is separate from the rear/forward, with a drain path/tube connecting them. The middle is padded (by me) for any oil/fluid leaks and should not have saltwater collecting there. Have had water accumulate in the middle due to mechanical leakage from the engine.

Is the shaft log in that compartment in that model Hatteras? Seems like the two most likely sources would be either the shaft log (if it's in that area) or the salt water cooling piping, or the heat exchanger, or seawater pump.

If I'm understanding you correctly the water is accumulating under the engine. That compartment should be sealed off as mentioned. If you're getting saltwater in there then it most likely is from the engines raw water system.

Hi All,

Not sure how my 48 YF compares but for WIW,,,,,

The compartments under the engines are sealed, the compartments behind the engine where the shafts are have hoses that drain the water produced by the shaft packing into the center bilge between the engines where it is pumped out by a 3700gph bilge pump direct to its own thru hull.

CONFESSION

The watter was fresh not salt. I finally got up the nerve to taste it kinda nastey a little oil on top. About the time i tasted it SPELLBOUND answere the post and i texed him. After telling him it was fresh he said engine coolent . No not possible i use the detroit stuff its pink. This stuff looked like gray watter kinda. It is the hot watter heater it sprang a leak just at the input. The leak was shooting a small spray into the compartment.... FIXED! AND GOOD TO GO. Leave Sunday for a short trip to Beauford SC our anual family cruse.... ABOUT 400 TO 500 MILES.
A BIG THANKS FOR THE QUICK RESPONCE....

Tim
