Tough one.

Fins work well underway. At anchor even zero speed systems can only do so much in my experience. In some boats while on plane, fins can disrupt the flow of water to the props causing a rumbling noise.

On the plus side they are easier to retrofit since the actuators don’t require much room and neither do the rest of the hydraulics

Gyros work great especially at slow speed and anchor but require a lot of juice. You may need to run two gens unless they are oversized.

But the biggest downside to gyros is space and to some extend weight. Hard to find room for them as they are BIG. In some boats they install two smaller gyros vs a single big one.

Space is especially a problem on hatteras MY with the keel tanks taking most of the space amidship where you want weight to be located.

What pascal said... plus..

Cost of fin stabilizer system is about $75K.... two gyros over $200K.

I just installed Naiad system two years ago.
