I started out to the Hudson canyon last night in my friends 34 Yellowfin, with two other guys, both in their mid thirties. I already knew in advance we would hit 7 to 8 footers with 20 knot winds, but the Capt. (my age) said we would be OK. Needless to say, Cap used his 3 (250 Suzukis) to try to keep us at 25 knots, in a five foot head sea. At about 60 miles offshore, we started hitting 10 footers, and he decided to head back ten miles to flatter waves. I was probably in the air more than on the boat for most of the ride. This didn't seem to bother him, or the two younger guys.
The water was totally dead, and we were the ONLY vessel out there. There were no birds, and channel 68 was dead. (usually a lot of chatter). We trolled for three miserable hours, but the radar was asleep. I finally convinced him to head back another 20 miles to fish for dolphin. He headed back at about 40 knots, which was UNBELIEVABLE! We caught about 8 or nine fish, and lost a few, and then they were gone.
My back was hurting, one knee was bleeding from hitting the console, and my hands were killing me from holding on for dear life. At 52, I felt like I was 92, and I was totally exhausted.
The worst part was the two other guys thought it was like a Coney Island ride. They know I'm looking for a 45-46 Hatt, but they told me that was too slow. I told them if we were in that boat, we could have continued to the canyons, and we would have been there two hours later. Soooo, I guess I'm not a fast CC guy, at this stage of my life, but it has convinced me even more, that I know what kind of boat, I'm looking for.
My friend asked me if I wanted to go out again tonight (much calmer seas) but I told him to call me when he gets a real boat.
